Amazon India launches “women-only” delivery station

Amazon.in has announced the launch of a “first-of its-kind women-only delivery station” in India. The online marketpace said that the project, which aims to “empower women and transform their lives”, has been kick-started with its first delivery station in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and the second in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

In a statement issued yesterday (3 March) Amazon added: “Through this initiative, Amazon has taken the lead to engage with women, create unique relevant job opportunities and enable them to be achievers in this field.

“These dedicated Amazon India women delivery stations will through their service partners be completely managed and run by women.

“Women at both these stations will deliver packages on two-wheelers, covering a radius of 2-3 kms from the delivery station. There are plans to offer self-defense classes to them for their safety alongside a dedicated helpline number created for these associates to dial in for any support or help needed during the day.”

Sharing his views on this initiative, Samuel Thomas, Director, Transportation, Amazon India said: We are committed to use our resources and infrastructure of innovation and technology to support the women in our country explore and succeed in what was otherwise a very male dominated sector.

“We are proud to have pioneered the women only delivery station which is a first-of-its-kind India-specific innovation from Amazon and look forward to help women across communities attain financial independence in life.

Meanwhile, local media have reported that Amazon is set to build its “largest delivery centre outside of the US” in Hyderabad (the city where the company is also building its biggest Indian warehouse).
