Flirtey completes drone delivery in US urban environment

Drone startup Flirtey has reported that it has recently completed the first federally-sanctioned drone delivery in a US urban area without the help of a human to manually steer it. The half mile-drone flight took place in Hawthorne, Nevada on 10 March.

Flirtey CEO Matt Sweeny said told Fortune that the drone’s flight path was programmed using GPS.

The drone carried a parcel of “emergency supply” items to the front porch of an uninhabited house. The cargo box was lowered on a rope while the drone hovered above.

Flirtey carried out the test with its partner, the University of Nevada at Reno.

Last year, Flirtey conducted the first FAA-approved drone delivery in a rural area by dropping off emergency supplies to a health clinic in Virginia.
