Speed Post launched in Kalimpong,India
Speed post was introduced at Kalimpong on Monday. The facility is expected to boost trade in the region, postal department officials said.
“Very soon same day speed post delivery service will be introduced in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and Siliguri, thus linking these four places,” post master general of north Bengal, John Samuel said. This allows for a a parcel or document from Darjeeling to Kurseong to be delivered the same day through speed post.
Addressing a press conference, Samuel told reporters that speed post will soon be introduced at Mirik as well, after a survey is conducted. “Post office business in this hilly region is doing encouragingly well. We are planning to link even small towns of this region with one day delivery,” he said. For the first time in the hills, a major philately exhibition will be held in Darjeeling within a year, Samuel announced.
More than 15,000 stamps which have been released after independence, along with stamps of other countries, will be displayed by the department.
Philatelists from across the country and students of different schools of Darjeeling are expected to participate in this three day exhibition. “The objective of this exhibition is to encourage the philatelists and to inculcate the habit of stamp collection among students,” Samuel added.
In order to bring the postal department to world standards, many new schemes will soon be introduced in the post offices of the hills, he said.
