India Post launches drone mail service in Himachal Pradesh

The service commenced on Friday between the Mandi Head Post Office and the Rehardhar Branch Post Office in the state. The initiative follows feedback received by the minister during interactions with Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, who highlighted the need for faster and more efficient delivery services in difficult terrains.

The inaugural drone flight covered a route that spans approximately 12 kilometres by road but only six kilometres in a straight line. The aerial journey was completed in just six minutes, demonstrating the potential of drone technology to overcome geographical challenges in hilly areas.

On its return trip, the drone transported accumulated parcels and postal articles back to the central hub, completing the journey in 12 minutes. The entire automated round trip was concluded in less than 20 minutes.

Traditionally, mail delivery to the remote Rehardhar Branch Post Office takes nearly a full day because of winding mountain roads and challenging terrain. With the introduction of the drone-based service, delivery times have been reduced dramatically, offering a faster and more reliable alternative for postal operations in the region.

Officials said the initiative is expected to enhance service efficiency, improve connectivity for remote communities, and support the modernization of India Post’s delivery network in geographically challenging areas. The pilot service could also serve as a model for expanding drone-assisted postal delivery to other hard-to-reach locations across the country.
