Acquisitions in Chile and in Turkey
Deutsche Post World Net is acquiring the Commercial Safeway SA company, headquartered in Santiago/Chile. With its 40 percent market share, the logistics company is the market leader in air freight export of perishable goods in Chile. With this acquisition, Deutsche Post further expands its market position in refrigerated food transport, one of the most important market segments for logistics in Latin America.
Commercial Safeway achieved 2002 annual revenues of EUR 60m and currently has around 60 employees. The company’s core business is exporting salmon, fruit and vegetables to the USA. The company will be integrated into DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, the new unit for air and ocean freight within Deutsche Post World Net.
Deutsche Post is also simultaneously strengthening its activities in Turkey. Its acquisition of Berben Ekspress Nakliyat, one of the leading Turkish logistics companies headquartered in Istanbul, establishes an important Middle Eastern pillar for Deutsche Post. The purchase is contingent upon the approval of the local cartel authorities. Berben Ekspress has been active for the Group since 1987 as a subcontractor to Deutsche Post subsidiary Danzas in Turkey.
Berben Ekspress, with 130 employees, achieved annual revenues of USD 33m in 2001.
