Deutsche Post to Invest Millions in Asia

German postal group Deutsche Post World Net said on Friday it plans to invest millions of dollars in Asia this year as part of its aim to maintain double-digit revenue growth in the region. ‘It’s in the three-digit million area for one year, in U.S. dollars,’ Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman of the board of management of Deutsche Post, told a news conference in Singapore. ‘In Asia, we are growing double-digit in revenues so we need more people and more investments.’ Deutsche Post, which has a presence in Asia through its courier unit, DHL Worldwide Express, and logistics unit Danzas Group, said it was eyeing an entry into Asia’s domestic markets in the next 24 months. ‘I am a fan of joint ventures, to have good local partners,’ Zumwinkel said. ‘(The investments would be in) express and logistics, not mail.'” Reuters: “John Mullen, chief operating officer of DHL’s Asia Pacific operations, said industry estimates have shown cargo growing at eight to nine percent, but he believed growth in the express segment was closer to 10-11 percent. ‘We are fairly confident that we are taking market share of the growth rates,’ Mullen said. He said DHL was interested in Asian markets with viable domestic opportunities. ‘The Big Four in Asia are Japan, China, Australasia and India,’ Mullen said.
