UK Royal Mail job losses evenly spread

Royal Mail is likely to spread job losses evenly when it makes 15,000 of its staff redundant later this year, although there will be some regional variations. Last June, Royal Mail said it would make the job cuts as part of a wide-ranging restructuring of the loss-making service. The redundancies represent almost 15 per cent of the 107,000 workforce.

Union leaders were yesterday given details of where the cuts would be made and how many workers in each region would lose their jobs. According to the union, London’s workforce fall by almost 1,700 – almost 20 per cent – to fewer than 7,000 staff. Middlesex is likely to be the worst hit county; its postal service will lose almost 24 per cent of its jobs, shrinking from 2,937 to 2,236. In the west of Scotland staffing will fall from 4,655 to 3,749. Other areas will escape more lightly, some with job cuts of less than 10 per cent.
