Estonian growth in consignments makes TNT change aircraft

The TNT Estonia express delivery firm changed its earlier aircraft for a much bigger one as of Monday as the constantly growing number of express consignments was becoming difficult for the old aircraft to handle.

In the past five years the number of consignments delivered by TNT has increased by two hundered percent, which is one of the main reason of changing the aircraft, said TNT Estonia managing director Asko Talu.

Rein Loik, board chairman of AS Tallinna Lennujaam (Tallinn Airport) added that the airport’s cargo terminal had remained too small for the present consignments. The company is planning considerably expansion of the terminal as the number of consignments is likely to increase considerably in the next few years.

If the LET 410 type aircraft TNT had been operating so far, took on up to 1.5 tons of goods, then the new HS 748 cargo aircraft can carry as much as six tons of goods. Besides, the goods hatch of the aircraft is bigger, making it possible to switch to pallets in goods handling instead of former small packages, Talu said.

The HS 748 service flies to Helsinki every weekday. TNT Estonia is buying the cargo service for TNT Express from the Swedish carrier West Air Europe.
