Baltic regulators vow to see to development of postal services

The Baltic states’ national regulators at a meeting in Riga on Friday agreed to build favorable economic environment and facilitate development of electronic communications and postal services in their countries.

This is especially important in view of the European common market and the expected liberalization of the European postal market, stated the agreement signed by electronic communications and postal services regulators of the three Baltic states in their first meeting.

The Latvian regulator said the meeting had discussed regulation of interconnection services and tariffs, cost structure of fixed-line and mobile telephony services, liberalization of new telecommunications markets, promotion of competition and development of new electronic communications services, etc.

Baltic states’ regulators said they were committed to further cooperation between themselves and with other regulators in neighboring regions as well as with the Independent Regulator Group and the European Commission’s European Regulator Group.

It was agreed that national regulators from the Baltic states should meet at least once a year in future.
