Pricing in proportion research

Postwatch today releases research on Pricing in Proportion (PiP), Royal Mail’s new pricing structure.

The key findings are:
• 84 per cent of those interviewed were aware of PiP,
• 87 per cent of vulnerable customers who noticed a difference in the amount they pay (the elderly, rural dwellers and those on low income) believe they are paying more for their post following PiP’s introduction.
• 12 per cent of over 1000 items posted were charged incorrect postage;

Commenting on the research, Millie Banerjee CBE, Chair of Postwatch, said:

“Our research shows that Royal Mail’s huge effort to raise awareness and understanding of PiP has been successful but is potentially being undermined by some post offices failing to advise and charge customers correctly.

“One in every eight customers being incorrectly charged is indefensible and unacceptable. Our results clearly show the need for Royal Mail’s ‘amnesty’ on surcharges to continue until both customers and staff have adapted to the new pricing system. Additional staff training should help address this problem. In the run-up to the busy Christmas period, this should be undertaken immediately.”

Thailand’s RFID market to reach $32m in 2010

Recent research from Frost & Sullivan reveals that the RFID market in Thailand was worth $16.3 million last year, and is expected to reach $32 million by 2010. “eyefortransport”

According to the Frost & Sullivan study – Thailand RFID Markets – Thailand is among the more promising RFID markets among the Asian countries, since it is the manufacturing base for many industries. Key applications for RFID include supply chain, manufacturing, and logistics, where the technology can help eliminate distance limitations, and can be applied internationally to promote trade. The country’s RFID market growth will be driven primarily by growth in manufacturing and logistics applications.

Increasing use of RFID technology presents local entrepreneurs with an early opportunity to capture this market, says the analyst of this research service. To make all this possible, awareness-raising activities and education, and training for private users and government organisations is important.

As the global market for RFID expands, Thailand is not only set to encourage the growth of the technology locally, but is anticipated to be at the forefront of the global RFID markets by 2010.

Organisations such as the National Electronics & Computer Technology Centre (Nectec) and GS1 Thailand help in this aim. The ICT Ministry is also promoting the use of RFID technology to track and trace products as part of a wider government plan to establish Thailand as a logistics hub in Indo-China.

Besides meeting the global mandates, there will also be substantial domestic demand for RFID applications in Thailand, according to the analyst. This includes tracking birds and vaccine supplies to reduce the impact of outbreaks of bird flu; tracking of food and drug items, for counterfeit/pedigree purposes, and to limit the brand damage from recall incidents, enforcing maritime port security, addressing security threats, improving government, and commercial logistics, securing e-payments through contactless smartcards.

Shanghai, Inchon Vie for Location of DHL Hub

DHL has chosen the Chinese city Shanghai and Inchon in South Korea as the shortlists for the location of its hub for North Asia region.

The hub, which will need an investment of tens of millions of euros, will become the third one for the company in Asia in the wake of that located in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Jerry Hsu said that DHL is now expanding rapidly in Asia, thus it considers establishing a hub in the North Asia region. After completion, it will mainly cover the markets in China, Japan and South Korea as well as other areas in North Asia.

Scott Price, chief executive officer for DHL Express Asia Pacific, revealed that Shanghai and Inchon are geographically close to each other and both has hub airport with a rather large amount of imports and exports of freight. Therefore, DHL will give priority to cost factors, including land, labor force, tax and speed of custom clearance.

In addition, the development focus and routes of its partners like Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd., Hong Kong’s flag carrier, over the future ten years are also the factors DHL will take into account.

DHL weighs location of North Asia hub

DHL recognises fast growth in Asia and is considering construction of a hub in the north of the region.

Shanghai or Inchon will be selected as the express hub of north Asia in the coming three months, said Jerry Hsu, president for DHL Greater China.

The hub will be built up with multi-hundred million Euros, and it will become the third DHL hub in Asia besides that in Hong Kong and Singapore after completion.

In August this year, DHL entered into a memorandum of understanding with Shanghai Airport (Group) Co., indicating the intention of building the hub there. However, the final decision will be made based on examination and review on the two cities.

DHL Asia Pacific CEO Scott Price showed that airline partners’ development orientation for the following decade is a significant factor for the decision making in addition to costs of land, labor, taxation and clearance.
