DHL mulls pricing review

DHL Express said it is reviewing its pricing policies for the next two years.

This, after rivals United Parcel Service, Inc. (UPS) and FedEx Corp. have announced plans to increase their respective rates for package delivery service. Starting Jan. 1, 2007, UPS and FedEx express delivery unit FedEx Express will increase service rates by 4.9% and 3.5%, respectively for US customers.

For the local market, however, representatives from UPS and FedEx said the actual timeline and amount of service rate increase for the Philippine market are currently being prepared.

“As all businessmen must, DHL will periodically increase rates to reflect rising costs of operations as well as investment,” DHL Express Philippines country manager Lawrence Llamzon told BusinessWorld.

UK internet shopping reached a new all-time high in October

The IMRG Index reached 2675, eclipsing the previous high of 2602 recorded for December 2005. Sales for October were estimated to be worth GBP2.73 billion.
E-retail has grown at its fastest ever rate in 2006, increasing by an average of GBP50 million per month during the first ten months of the year. During the same period two years ago, in 2004, the average growth rate was just GBP16 million per month.

The IMRG Index is expected to climb at least a further 30% between October and the peak month of December, in line with IMRG’s earlier estimate of GBP7 billion for the 10-week run-up to Christmas, which therefore remains unchanged.

Korean Air orders 25 Boeing aircraft for 5.5 billion dollars

Korean Air Tuesday announced a 5.5 billion dollar order for 25 Boeing passenger and freight aircraft, the biggest deal in South Korean aviation history and a fresh setback for European rival Airbus.

The nation’s leading flag carrier said in a statement it would buy 10 777-300ER (Extended Range) planes, four 737-900ER and one 737-700, five 747-8 Freighters and five 777-200 Freighters.

It also has options for four 777-300ER, two 747-8F and two 737-900ER.

Delivery of the aircraft is scheduled for between 2009 and 2019.

The transaction is the biggest aircraft order in Korea’s aviation history in terms of the number of planes and the purchase price, said spokesman Shin Jin-Chul.

Korean Air said it aims to maintain its position as the world’s number one commercial cargo carrier, which it has held for the past two years, and to become one of the world’s top 10 passenger carriers by 2010.

New Zealand Post plans for online market

New Zealand Post plans to develop an online marketplace to help small and medium-sized enterprises export goods and services online, with possible financial backing from the Government.

It intends to set up a website to let businesses deal directly with overseas consumers, while handling shipping, logistics and the processing of international payments for them. Spokeswoman Fiona Mayo says a decision on whether the proposal will go ahead could be made next month, after which NZ Post may approach the Government for help.

However, the service is unlikely to be available for about a year. ”It will be a public-private partnership, but it needs to be approved from our end before any government funding comes our way.”

Ms Mayo says the cost has not yet been worked out, but NZ Post has already invested a lot of time in the plan. ”We have designed what we want to do, but we haven’t taken it beyond that at this stage. It certainly would be a first for New Zealand.”

An Post invests euro 1.6m in parcel plant expansion

A new euro 1.6m extension to An Post’s national parcel processing facility at Portlaoise Mails Centre was officially opened today by Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources Noel Dempsey.

More than 20,000 parcels are processed at the Portlaoise hub each day, comprising parcel mail posted in Dublin and Leinster, as well as all incoming international parcels.

The 9000 sq ft extension to the mails centre brings to 43,000 sq ft the space devoted exclusively to parcel processing, an operation which involves tariff checking, barcoding, customs clearance (for international items) and sorting for onward dispatch and delivery.

“With globalisation, liberalisation and developments in technology, all national postal operators including An Post, have to change very rapidly to stay competitive and commercial in the postal market,” said Mr Dempsey.

Bulgaria licenses first private postal services provider

Bulgaria has licensed domestic postal operator Tip Top Courier as the first private universal postal services provider, the country’s telecoms regulator, CRC, said on Monday.
“This market was worth 125 million levs (USD82 million/64 million euro) in 2005, which was a 24% annual increase. With the granting of a license to Tip Top Courier [the market] is entering the stage of competition,” CRC chairman Georgi Alexandrov told a news conference.
Tip Top Courier will launch universal postal services operations in January under the trademark T-Post. The company will invest some seven million levs in building its network by January 2009, Tip Top Courier executive officer Denka Dimitrova told the same news conference. Dimitrova said the investment will be financed through the company’s own funds and bank loans.
Bulgaria’s postal services market is likely to grow by another 24% this year, Alexandrov said. Postal services through couriers accounted for 60.8% of the total postal services market last year, according to data presented by Tip Top Courier chairman of the board of directors, Lachezar Kaparashev.
