TNT Express expands Express Road Network to Morocco

TNT Express, one of the world’s leading express delivery companies today announced it has extended its Express Road Network (ERN) into Africa by starting an international road line haul connection to Casablanca, Morocco. By doing this, TNT is the first major express company to create an owned time definite road line haul connection between Africa and Europe.

This expansion complements TNT Express’ focus on further strengthening its networks by expanding into the merging markets within and around Europe, which to date has concentrated on Eastern Europe. This step reflects TNT Express’ strategic intents to become number one in both Europe and Rest of the World emerging markets.

Morocco traditionally has a strong trade relationship with the region as the gateway between Europe and Africa. TNT will leverage on this geographic situation by connecting its entire European road network to the African continent. Morocco is one of the fastest growing markets in the region and several trade agreements will fuel this growth in the future. Casablanca is connected to the ERN through Madrid with a sea connection between Tangier and Algesiras.

Teamsters, UPS Starting Early on 2008 Contract Negotiations

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters and UPS today opened negotiations on a new contract to replace a six-year pact that expires July 31, 2008.
“While it is unusual to start this early, we do so because there are some very complex issues to address and we all recognize it will take time to find solutions,” said John McDevitt, UPS’s senior vice president for Global Transportation Services. “And an early start to negotiations greatly increases the chances of an early finish.”
“Ultimately, the only way to solve complex issues is through the collective bargaining process,” McDevitt added. “Starting almost two years early is the right thing to do for UPS employees as well as customers whose business depends on UPS.”
The Teamsters union represents roughly 238,000 UPS hourly workers in the United States.

UK Royal Mail unveils new online Postage Service

Royal Mail today launched a new service that allows the general public to buy and print their postage online for the first time.

The online postage service gives customers more choice and flexibility in the way they access Royal Mail’s services 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Customers pay for their postage on the internet by selecting the appropriate amount for their letter or parcel, and paying by debit or credit card or via a pre-pay account. A unique barcode is then printed directly onto envelopes, labels or paper before posting in the normal way.

There is no subscription fee to the service – available from www.royalmail.com – and tariffs are the same as normal postage. Customers can choose from a full range of posting options, from First Class to international services. Customers can also print out a variety of forms online, including a Certificate of Posting and Customs forms for international postings.

UK Royal Mail lets customers print stamps at home – report

Customers of the Royal Mail postal service will be able to pay for their postage online and print out unique bar codes directly onto envelopes from today, The Times reported.

The newspaper reported that the Royal Mail says the move is one of the most significant changes to the postal system since the Penny Black, the world’s first adhesive stamp, was introduced in 1840. The historic stamp was introduced to shift the cost of postage to the sender, instead of the recipient.

Customers will have to set up an online account and can then pay for postage using either a credit card or a prepaid account, selecting the appropriate amount for their letter or parcel.

The new service comes shortly after the Royal Mail introduced a new system for sending items, based on the size as well as the weight of the package.

U.S. FedEx signs airport lease, UPS on the way

FedEx Corp. should be starting work on its new package-sorting center near Charlotte County Airport within the next four to six weeks — and UPS won’t be far behind in expanding its airport facility.

Last week, a developer working for FedEx signed a ground lease with the airport for 4.8 acres on Golf Course Boulevard, according to Gary Quill, airport executive director. FedEx then immediately signed a lease for the 35,000-square-foot building with the developer, Orlando-based Regional Development.

In a related development, UPS has asked the Charlotte County Airport Authority to increase its ground lease on Challenger Boulevard from 2.9 to 6.5 acres for a major expansion of the distribution center it currently operates on the site.

Don Lee, District 2 airport commissioner, said UPS’s request will be discussed at Thursday’s regular Airport Authority meeting. He anticipated no objections — indeed, UPS’s expansion has been anticipated for some time, although it’s been running on a little slower track than the FedEx deal.
