Netwerk VSP starts next-week delivery of addressed mail

Starting 1 January 2007, TNT will launch a next-week mail delivery service through its subsidiary Netwerk VSP. With this service, intended for delivery within the Netherlands of large volumes of pre-sorted, addressed mail on the basis of next-week delivery, TNT is responding to customer demand for non-time-critical delivery of large volumes of addressed mail at a very competitive price.

Starting a next-week delivery service is an integral part of the company’s strategy for the postal market to achieve greater cost flexibility and offer wider scope for price differentiation, while maintaining margin levels.

Group Managing Director of TNT’s Mail division, Harry Koorstra, says, “Customers are increasingly demanding more flexibility in the price and delivery time for large volumes of addressed mail, like leaflets, brochures and catalogues. We are responding to this market development with a dedicated next-week delivery service. We will be offering this service through our subsidiary Netwerk VSP, a company with a low cost structure and a proven track record in the delivery of large consignments of mail.”

Netwerk VSP Addressed is a new service of Netwerk VSP, a subsidiary of TPG Post. Netwerk VSP is a large distributor of unaddressed mail throughout the Netherlands and has about 22,000 deliverers.

DHL Malaysia gains from diversified client base

DHL Malaysia expects double-digit growth in sales for this year and 2007, driven by growing demand from companies of all sizes to export packages. “We did not consciously work for a diversified portfolio but our customers cut across so many segments that we ended up with it. What this means for DHL is that when the economy goes down one way, another part will go up, so we are able to balance our portfolio,” newly appointed DHL Malaysia country manager Sam Leong told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Leong has been working for DHL for more than 22 years, and was previously DHL Seoul’s country operations director.

He said Malaysia is a key market in Asia Pacific for the DHL network. DHL has a 42 per cent share of the express cargo market here. DHL is available in 60 locations nationwide, including gateways, offices, service centres, terminals and warehouses, and three retail outlets. The retail outlet was set up in response to customer feedback requesting for an outlet in high density areas for convenience. Leong said the venture into retail has been very successful so far, and the company will look for other areas where similar retail outlets can be set up. “We are doing a lot of studies to pin point the right location,” he added.

Consumers flood DMA with mail opt-out requests

The Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has received 100,210 requests from consumers to be added to the Mailing Preference Service (MPS), in the wake of last Monday’s news that Royal Mail had suspended a postman for encouraging people to opt out of door-drop deliveries.

This 3.5% increase in direct mail refuseniks takes the number of people signed up to the MPS to more than 3m. The most powerful catalyst spurring people to contact the DMA proved to be GMTV’s coverage of the issue on ITV last Friday, which prompted 31,000 consumers to opt out of direct mail deliveries.

A Royal Mail spokesman would not reveal how many requests it had received from consumers wanting to opt out of unaddressed door-drops, but it is believed that Royal Mail’s website crashed at one point because of the volume of consumers looking for information on door-drops. ‘We operate entirely separately from the DMA,’ said the spokesman. ‘There is no reason why we should publicise those numbers’.

He added that Royal Mail’s website had always had details of how to opt out of door-drops, but accepted that it had not proactively publicised the option.

UPS completes global launch of billing analysis tool

UPS has completed the launch of the UPS Billing Analysis Tool, an industry-leading global expense management technology for customers that converts transactional billing data into a powerful solution for analyzing and managing global transportation costs.

UPS’s billing technology portfolio now provides customers around the world the ability to analyze detailed financial information about their package shipping activity in 36 of the world’s most active trading countries, all in a single data file. The information is available to customers in 21 languages and can be converted into the customer’s preferred currency. The tool was demonstrated today during UPS’s annual Technology Summit for reporters, held here at the home of UPS’s global all-points air hub.

The Billing Analysis Tool not only enables customers to segregate, view and produce reports on international, ground and express shipping charges, but also breaks out associated costs such as duties, taxes and total customs and brokerage fees.

The Billing Analysis Tool has enormous potential not only for logistics management but also for accounting and procurement functions. Because it provides some 180 shipping and billing data elements, both large and small enterprises can use it to analyze and allocate transportation expenses according to their individual needs.

DHL projects double-digit revenue growth in FY07

DHL Express has projected a double-digit revenue growth for 2006 and 2007 for its Malaysian operations, as the country continues to be one of its key markets in the Asia Pacific region, its country manager for Malaysia Sam Leong said.

He based this on DHL’s view of Malaysia being able to continue to attract investments that would benefit the company.

“(Revenue) Growth is extremely healthy. We are targeting double digit growth this year and next year,” he said at a media luncheon with DHL Express Malaysia senior management in Kuala Lumpur on Sept 5.
Leong said DHL Express, which has a 42% market share in the air express business in Malaysia, believes that it can build up its market share in certain segments.

An area, which the company hopes to develop is the retail sector where the company intends to open more of its ServicePoint outlets in the Klang Valley.

DHL recently said it would increase the number of ServicePoint outlets to 11 from the current three over the next three years in key cities in Malaysia, including converting some of the DHL centres at strategic locations.

Such outlets would help strengthen DHL’s existing network and expand its customer base, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
