TNT acquires Speedage to build leading position in domestic express market in India

TNT N.V. today announced the acquisition of ARC India Limited which operates under the trade name Speedage Express Cargo Services, one of the leading road express companies in India.

This acquisition is a key component of TNT’s Focus on Networks strategy as announced in December 2005. Acquiring Speedage is in line with TNT’s strategic objective to become the leading provider of express deliveries in the emerging markets in Asia, specifically India. Combining Speedage’s strong domestic road network with TNT’s international and domestic networks will form a powerful platform for further expansion in the fast growing Indian express market.

TNT will gain a top 3 position in the fast growing Indian domestic road express market with the acquisition of Speedage. The combined revenues for TNT in India after this acquisition will be approaching Euro 100 million in 2007.

Modernised postal service soon

The Posts and Telecommunications Ministry has decided to modernise the Postal Service and provide a better and speedier service to the public under a Japanese aid scheme.

This follows a resolution adopted by the Asia-Pacific Postal Union at a meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently, said a press release issued by the Ministry.

The resolution said the Sri Lanka Postal Service should gain priority for development and modernisation over all other postal services in Asian Countries considering Sri Lanka’s high literacy rate, enormity of the mail and the country’s stable rate of economic development.

Following the resolution the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) agreed to provide the feasibility study for the modernisation and development programme.

A team of officials from Japan’s Mitsubishi Corporation and Philippines Ravo International Corporation visited Sri Lanka and held discussions with Posts and Telecommunications Minister D. M. Jayaratne as a prelude to the preparation of the feasibility report.

Once the feasibility report is submitted the Ministry will give its rulings about the relevant proposals and the project will be implemented under the supervision of the World Postal union and assistance of the Asia-Pacific Postal Union.

The release said almost 90 per cent of the Postal Department’s income is generated by 20 per cent of the Post offices which come under Grade One category. These post offices will be given better equipment and facilities during the modernisation programme.

Pallet networks – picking up from the parcels market

Whether you think of pallet deliveries as big parcels or small freight consignments, the networks are becoming stronger by the year, and are learning more than a few tricks from their parcels industry cousins. Marcia MacLeod reports.

When Palletline opened its doors as the first pallet network in 1992, the logistics industry looked on with interest. Here was a way to deliver less than full loads without having to drive the length of the country and without worrying about return loads. But, some asked, would it catch on? Any doubters must be eating their words, for today Palletline and nearly all of its competitors are enjoying double-digit growth in volumes handled.

Palletways claims a 12 per cent growth in the first quarter of 2006з, while United Pallet Network (UPN) has seen its business jump by an average 21 per cent month on month. Pall-Ex is recording annual growth of 24 per cent and The Pallet Network (TPN) says volumes are up a whopping 32.8 per cent over last year.

Even that is overshadowed by Pallet-Track, which claims its business has grown by an incredible 84 per cent. Only Palletline grew more slowly – 5 per cent over the past year, 10 per cent in the last six months – but this is probably because it transferred its dangerous goods business to Hazchem Network, of which it is part-owner.

Regulator criticises Royal Mail over junk mail letter

Royal Mail has been accused of cynically manipulating customers by claiming they might not receive vital information if they opt out of junk mail.

Householders wanting to end the mountains of unsolicited letters that land on the doormat are being warned they risk missing important notices from local and central government.

These could include public health warnings such as how to deal with an outbreak of bird flu or Home Office advice about terrorist threats.

But yesterday the independent consumer body Postwatch described the threat – which angry customers say is blackmail – as ‘completely untrue’.

The revelation caused further anger yesterday. Labour MP Stephen Pound accused Royal Mail of effectively blackmailing customers to protect its lucrative junk mail business – last year it delivered 3.3billion items and the amount is rising.
Royal Mail has launched an email address – [email protected] – in addition to posted requests from customers to end junk mail deliveries.

But yesterday it was still warning callers to its telephone hotline that they would not receive ‘any unaddressed mail’ if they sent in the form.

Deutsche Bank CEO says not interested in pursuing takeover of Postbank

Deutsche Bank AG’s chief executive Josef Ackermann said that the bank is not interested in pursuing a possible takeover of Deutsche Postbank AG, while speaking at the Handelsblatt-sponsored ‘Banks in Transition’ conference.

‘We are not pursuing the Postbank actively,’ Ackermann said.

Germany’s largest bank is also not interested in possible merger or takeover of rival Commerzbank AG, the CEO said.

Media reports which speculated that Deutsche Bank was interested in pursuing a takeover bid of Postbank had driven the shares in the recent past.

Deutsche Post chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel silenced some of this speculation when he recently told journalists that that company has no plans to relinquish majority control of the company’s Postbank AG unit in the mid-term.
