How to save money with the new postage prices

From yesterday, post is no longer charged purely on the basis of weight – the size of a letter or parcel also has to be taken into account.

It was billed as one of the biggest changes to the postal service in recent years.

But within a day of the new sizing system being introduced by the Post Office, customers discovered easy ways to save money. Sending multiple items in separate envelopes can result in significant savings.

Folding an A4 letter in half before it is priced at the post office counter creates a saving of more than 25 per cent.

Sending goods such as CDs in the smallest envelope possible can also bring savings.

The discoveries will encourage businesses which send out hundreds of letters and small parcels every day to review their postal strategy, with the potential to save thousands of pounds.

Placing two paperback books in an A4 envelope results in a charge of Pounds 2.20 but when the books are put in separate small envelopes each one costs only 90p, a saving of 40p.

The extra envelope, however, creates extra sorting and delivery work for the Royal Mail, which is facing opposition from rival companies.

Placing an A4 letter in an A4 envelope costs 44p because it is classed as a “large letter”.

But when the same letter is folded in half and put it in an A5 envelope, the charge is 32p because it is classed as just a “letter”.

Post Office strike threat

Swansea’s two biggest post offices are bracing themselves for shutdown in a growing row over plans to move the city’s big Kingsway branch.

Staff have voted in favour of industrial action at a string of Crown post offices.

Details of exactly what form the action will take should emerge within 24 hours.

But it could force the temporary closure of The Kingsway, Morriston, Neath, Port Talbot, Llanelli and Carmarthen branches.

It would mean problems for customers who use them for anything from picking up benefit payments to applying for passports and renewing their car tax.

Union bosses say the action is in response to the proposed deal between the Post Office and WH Smith which would see The Kingsway office shut and move to the first floor of the Quadrant store.

On Saturday, 29 staff at The Kingsway’s post office braved downpours to stage a five-hour protest ahead of the controversial move that is planned for October 5.

Thousands of Swansea residents have signed a petition calling for bosses to scrap the proposal.

TNT expects to clinch logistics deal soon

Dutch mail firm TNT (TNT.AS: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Wednesday it should reach a deal soon on the sale of its underperforming logistics business, which it expects to be bought for more than 1 billion euros (USD 1.3 billion).

Private equity firms Apollo Management and PAI were shortlisted and were competing to clinch a deal, sources familiar with the matter have told Reuters.

“TNT NV expects to reach an agreement shortly about the sale of the Logistics division,” the company said in a statement, without giving a timeframe.

“Further announcements will follow, if and when appropriate,” TNT said.

TNT shares rose around 1 percent to 29.49 euros in early trade on Amsterdam’s Euronext exchange.

TNT (TP.N: Quote, Profile, Research) announced its intention to sell its underperforming logistics activities to concentrate on mail and express delivery — which represent about a quarter of group revenue — in December.

TNT’s logistics business has a book value of about 1.15 billion euros (USD 1.5 billion), according to TNT’s 2005 annual report, and the company has said it expects to make a profit on the sale and close it in the second half of the year.

Rabo Securities analyst Thijs Berkelder said he expected TNT to book proceeds from the sale of 1.5 billion euros, based on a selling price of 1.8 billion euros.

QAS Opens New Zealand Office And Signs Strategic Alliance With New Zealand Post

QAS, a leading supplier of address management solutions, is expanding its Asia Pacific presence by opening an office in New Zealand. Located in Auckland, the new office will be headed up by Angela Buckley, business development manager, New Zealand who will be reporting into Glenn Parker, managing director, QAS, Asia Pacific.

As part of its launch, QAS has signed a strategic alliance with NZ Post to gain access to its Postal Address File (PAF), a database of 1.8 million addresses which will enable QAS to cleanse and match addresses in its customers’ enterprise databases to ensure they are accurate and compliant.

One of the reasons QAS has established the office is because of New Zealand Post’s new four-digit postcode system. This system creates significant opportunities for QAS to assist local companies in converting their customer databases.

The NZ four-digit postcode system was introduced in June 2006 and, unlike the previous system, is required for all items of mail, whether sent from within the country or from overseas. There are 1,850 postcodes, with up to 10,000 locations in each code.
