Young warns that contracting out mail delivery could weaken Nation's Defense Against Terrorism

Letter Carriers union President William H. Young warned the U.S. Postal Service today against out-sourcing to private contractors the delivery of mail to American homes and businesses, saying such a move would weaken the nation’s defense against terrorist attacks. Young said the possibility of such an action by the Postal Service is not far-fetched, citing the Service’s recent announcement that is it considering contracting out work at postal Air Mail Centers. He said that could lead postal management into a right-wing temptation to contract out letter carrier work.

DHL USA launches new signature delivery options

DHL announced it will offer three new signature delivery service options to provide customers with more direct control over their delivery needs. The new options, including delivering packages without a required in-person signature, will make deliveries more convenient for DHL customers.

Shipments requiring signatures and destined for residential as well as commercial locations with limited hours of operation often result in multiple delivery attempts. In order to better accommodate the specific delivery needs of customers, DHL has expanded its service offerings from a single in-person signature option to three, allowing customers the flexibility to determine precisely how they want deliveries verified: signed by an adult with valid identification, by a signature of someone at the address, or left at the door or place of business per written instruction. These new options will provide more delivery flexibility and consistency for customers, especially those regularly receiving residential deliveries.

UPS today said it had made substantial progress in deploying new route planning technology that is reducing the number of miles driven by its familiar brown package cars on Oregon’s roads, saving fuel and cutting emissions.

Over the past 48 months, this has shaved roughly 773,400 miles off the normal route structures in Eugene, Springfield, Medford, Tualatin, Corvallis plus Vancouver, Wash., saving nearly 79,000 gallons of fuel and reducing annual CO2 emissions by 815 metric tons.

“As a transportation company, fuel is a necessity. But we have the technology now to better conserve fuel and operate more efficiently,” said UPS Oregon District Manager K.M. Liu. “And the ability to optimize our business with technology directly helps protect the environment as well.”
