Junk mail: stamp it out

When I go on holiday in ten days’ time I think I will have to take the back door key with me. After a fortnight away I certainly won’t be able to count on being able to push the front door open.
If you thought the piles of junk mail on your doormat were bad enough, they are just about to get ten times higher. Last week the Royal Mail and the Communication Workers’ Union agreed a deal that will see the floodgates open. Postmen were promised a 3.9 per cent rise in wages, and in return agreed to carry much greater quantities of blank, unaddressed mail.

Relay Express growing tall on leftovers from shipping giants

In the world of shipping, UPS, FedEx and DHL stand tall as giants. Yet for all their trucks and planes running at all hours of the day and night, missed shipments happen.

That’s where companies such as Relay Express step in. The Cincinnatibased courier service has made a living in part by delivering those extra packages while specializing in on-demand and scheduled deliveries within cities.

Relay Express entered the Columbus market in January to perform those services in the central Ohio area, and has plans to expand. The courier’s efforts to sell its first franchises have cleared their last hurdle.

FedEx Ground to build Triangle sort facility

FedEx Corp. plans to build a regional sorting facility near Raleigh-Durham International Airport to replace a smaller facility in Durham – a move that may result in new jobs.

FedEx Ground, the small-package delivery division of FedEx, has selected a piece of land near Kitty Hawk Drive and Globe Road in Morrisville to build a 128,851-square-foot facility.

The building will be 52 percent larger than FedEx Ground’s sorting facility in the Research Tri-Center industrial park in Durham, where 180 people work.

A contractor will be hired in late August, with building completion expected in August 2007. The building will be designed so that it can be easily expanded to as big as 175,000 square feet.

The new sorting facility is part of a six year, USD1.6 billion expansion program nationwide. FedEx Ground plans to build nine new hubs, expand 30 existing hubs and relocate 290 pickup and delivery terminals. The expansion will allow FedEx to expand its package capacity from 3 million to more than 5 million a day by the end of 2010.
