Print/Envelopes: Long live the statement

Could the rise of digital print and online billing see the death of paper-based statement marketing, asks Claire Foss.

The synergies between statements and marketing are obvious: customers are more likely to open, read and engage with statements and bills. Once the technology to produce tailored messages is in place, running costs are low. Brands including HSBC, BT and GE as well as most utility, telecoms and financial services are engaged in statement marketing programmes.

They are mining a rich seam. Transactional mail constitutes a third of the UK’s total mail, according to a Triangle Transactional Mail survey in January, of which about 70 per cent was generated from financial services.

UK Royal Mail PAF to undergo change in its pricing structure

Royal Mail is changing the licence agreement for its flagship data file Postcode Address File (PAF) to make it “simpler and more transparent” for users.

Currently PAF is charged on a per-computer server model as opposed to per-user, which is seen to discriminate against smaller businesses. Royal Mail is proposing to change to a tiered pricing structure based on the number of users of the PAF file.

The postal services company denied the move was intended to raise more revenue from PAF and said that access to the file would be cheaper for some users.

The new licence will be phased in over the next three years. The announcement was made at a Royal Mail AGM in June, with full details of the new prices to be revealed on 1 September.

Nampost Sues Ex-CEO

A former head of NamPost, Hermanus Kasper, cost the parastatal millions of dollars when he cancelled a service delivery contract with the City of Windhoek – and then promptly emerged as a central figure in another company that tendered to take over the same sort of service, the postal company claims in a case it has instituted in the High Court.

NamPost claims that a decision Kasper took in March 2003, will cost Kasper more than N$2 million if the parastatal has its way.

Net profits jumped too, by 19%, reaching 413 million USD. “Fifteen percent of our revenues are from services that didn’t exist three years ago,” says CEO Massimo Sarmi.
