FedEx to Acquire Watkins Motor Lines

FedEx Corporation today announced an agreement to acquire the less-than-truckload (LTL) operations of Watkins Motor Lines and certain affiliates for USD780 million, payable in cash. Heavyweight freight customers will benefit from the additional choice that this new, reliable and cost-effective solution will add to the FedEx Freight portfolio of services. Watkins Motor Lines, a privately held company headquartered in Lakeland, Fla., is a leading provider of long-haul LTL services. With over USD1 billion in annual revenue, Watkins will be rebranded FedEx National LTL and operate as a separate network within the FedEx Freight segment. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of fiscal 2007 and is subject to customary conditions, including government approvals. The acquisition is not expected to have a material effect on the fiscal 2007 financial results of FedEx.

Japan Post said Wednesday its mail service business is likely to fall into the red, with a net loss of 5.6 billion yen, in the current 2006 fiscal year for the first time in four years. In fiscal 2005 that ended in March, the mail delivery business recorded a 99.1 percent plunge in net profit from the previous year to 200 million yen, Japan Post said. The profit contraction is blamed in part on a drop in the amount of mail handled by post offices due to increased use of e-mail, according to analysts.

UK postal union threatens national strike

The postal workers’ union is threatening the first national postal strike for a decade, saying it is on a “collision course” with Royal Mail over plans for a free share issue. The Communication Workers Union gave the state-owned company four weeks to resume pay negotiations and withdraw plans to give workers free shares or face a vote for the first national postal strike since 1996. The union is also seeking guarantees on job security and pensions. The union warned that issuing shares, representing up to 20 per cent of the value of the business, to staff could open the door to the eventual privatisation of the company. CWU represents 160,000 of Royal Mail’s 200,000 workers. The strike threat emerged at the union’s annual conference in Bournemouth, where the CWU reported that more than 90,000 workers had voted in favour of the union’s view that there should be “no issue of shares as a first step to privatisation”.
