Eesti Post (Estonian Post) received an innovation prize for a card payments solution created for couriers and postal institutions at a world postal institutions award-giving ceremony Wednesday in Paris. By means of the solution, created in cooperation with the EMT mobile phone company, couriers will be able to make fast and safe card payments, which are ordinary card payments for the clients, Eesti Post reported. “It is very nice that the trend of Estonian Post to offer more convenient and effective solutions to clients was recognized as the best innovation in the postal world,” Eesti Post board member Kalle Tarien said. Estonian Post is the first East-European postal company to be given a World Mail Awards prize.

Chief executive Klaus Zumwinkel underlined, though, that the postal and logistics group has no intention of withdrawing from the US. ‘The setbacks in 2005 in connection with the integration of the hubs do not lead to a change in direction. Rather, they lead to a strengthening of our efforts,’ he said. DHL’s US express business suffered a loss of EUR400m (USD512m) last year, which was less than a year earlier but more than expected. Mr Zumwinkel underlined that as a global logistics player, a presence on this market was inevitable. 20% of Deutsche Post’s express volumes were coming from or destined for the US. The chief executive added that the division should be profitable from 2009.
