Irish state urged to protect post offices

The survival of the country’s remaining sub-post offices could be reliant on them continuing to process social welfare payments, according to the president of the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU). Speaking at the IPU annual conference yesterday, Joe McArdle, a postmaster in Co Louth, said “the actions of the Government in encouraging more and more social welfare claimants to divert their payments into bank accounts through electronic fund transfers is threatening the future viability of the post office network”. He welcomed an An Post agreement to process Garda fines, and said the possible creation of a new banking operation with Belgian bank Fortis “has the potential to be a major shot in the arm for the post office network”.

Irish sub-post offices faced with closure

Nearly 1,300 sub-postmasters trying to secure a 50pc rise in fee-income have been warned that some offices will have to face closure and severance payments.
The Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU) conference in Dundalk was told that claims for increases of up to 26m are being considered by an independent assessor appointed by Communications Minister Noel Dempsey. A former senior executive at An Post, Eamon Ryan is expected to issue his findings within three months. At present An Post pays 52m to its sub-postmasters, 18m of which is part of a transfer it receives from the Department of Social Welfare. UK Royal Mail showdown with Brown: Non-executives threaten mass resignation if Treasury does not approve pounds 1.5bn rights issue

The seven non-executive directors of the Royal Mail have issued a dramatic ultimatum to Gordon Brown, the chancellor: approve a pounds 1.5bn cash injection for the business or they will resign en masse in just two and a half months’ time. They are backing Allan Leighton, the chairman of Royal Mail, who is proposing a rights issue in which additional shares would be sold to the Government, which already owns the company. Of the money raised, pounds 1bn will be injected into the Royal Mail’s pension scheme and pounds 500m spent on automating the sorting of letters. Simultaneously, Leighton wants 20 per cent of the shares in Royal Mail to go into an employee trust in order to incentivise the 200,000 staff to support a modernisation programme, which could include more redundancies on top of the 30,000 already announced. The non-executive directors are among some of the most heavyweight figures in the City. They are: Sir Michael Hodgkinson, a former chief executive of BAA, Richard Handover, the ex-chairman of WH Smith, David Fish, the chairman of United Biscuits, Helen Weir, group finance director of Lloyds TSB, Bob Wigley, the chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe, Lady Prosser, a Labour peeress, and John Neill, the chief executive of Unipart.

European courier urged to put up hub in Subic

The Philippine Government is wooing a European courier service firm to put up shop in Subic as the scheduled transfer of Federal Express’ Asian hub from the freeport to China nears. An official privy to the matter said authorities had invited the company to visit possible sites in Subic and assess opportunities for a hub of operations here through their respective distribution network. The official declined to name the firm, saying it might get turned off with the premature publicity. With American firms Fedex operating a hub in Subic and UPS in Clark special economic zone, the country is hosting half of the four biggest package delivery and supply chain service providers in the world. The remaining two are Netherlands-headquartered TNT NV and Germany’s DHL International, both of which already have presence here.
