Russian Mail Service will lose USD36M in 2006

The Russian postal service will incur losses of USD36 million in 2006, its chief executive said Friday. Speaking at the reopening after refurbishment of St. Petersburg’s main post office, Igor Syrtsov admitted the company was facing losses, but said Russian Mail would be given 4.5 billion rubles (USD162 million) as part of an investment program in 2006. The funds will be used to build automated sorting centers in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and modernize post offices and transport, he said. Italian Post sees better mail volume and quality

The Italian postal service has seen more cross-border and in-country mail volume as a result of a quality of service program formed by the European Union Postal Directive in 2002 and monitored by an independent organization of postal administrations. Under the quality of service program, if postal organizations meet or exceed delivery targets they receive additional funds. “Quality of service has been very good for us,” said Massimo Sarmi, CEO of Poste Italiane, who spoke to reporters at a media breakfast here yesterday. “Our volumes have increased as well as the overall service quality of our mail.” Sarmi also noted a rise in direct mail in the country.

FirstGroup's GB Railfreight wins 12-month extension of UK mail train contract

FirstGroup PLC unit GB Railfreight said it has done a deal with Royal Mail to continue moving mail by rail for at least another year. GB told AFX News that it has won a 12-month extension of its contract with the state-owned mail group to run postal trains between London, the north west and Scotland. The company has not disclosed the value of the extension, which is due to run until the end of March next year. GB spokesman said there would be no change to the existing arrangements under which the company runs two return services a day between Willesden in London, Warrington and Shieldmuir in Scotland. However, the contract allows for the number of trains to be increased on a night-by-night basis subject to requirements. ‘The two sides will always talk about developing the relationship and that could lead to it going beyond that,’ the spokesman added. ‘GB Railfreight is in this for the long haul and Royal Mail has indicated that it wants to see rail as part of its distribution network.’

Royal Mail media manager Roche quits after restructure

Royal Mail’s former head of media markets Richard Roche is leaving the company following the reorganisation of its sector marketing division. It emerged earlier this year that Roche had been left without a job after a restructure was called by Royal Mail’s marketing director Alex Batchelor. However, a spokesman said at the time that Roche was still with the company and he was said to be in the running to replace Gordon Steele as sales and marketing director of the Post Office. But it is now understood that Roche will leave at the end of this week. He has effectively been replaced by Antony Miller, although Miller takes up the newly created role of head of media development. A Royal Mail spokesman confirms Roche’s departure and points out that the media development team under Miller has doubled in size following the restructure.
