New initiatives from FedEx, DHL to compete in Thai shipping market

FedEx Express has opened a new service centre on Silom Road in Bangkok. Among customers expected to benefit from the increased convenience are those in the city’s high-value gem and jewellery trade seeking next day delivery to Asia, the company said. Meanwhile, DHL Express has introduced Time Definite Delivery (TDD) service to Shanghai. The “startday” and “midday” services would offer the latest possible collection times for early next-day deliveries at 9 am and noon respectively, DHL executives said.

USPS seeks more inclusive co-palletisation test

The U.S. Postal Service filed a request with the Postal Rate Commission that it hopes will open its co-palletization test to more mailers.

The co-palletization program, begun last April, gives mailers of small circulation periodicals the same work-sharing discounts enjoyed by large mailers when they combine bundles/packages of different periodicals on the same pallet and drop-ship them to an area distribution center or sectional center facility.

Russia’s postal services market up 35percent in 2003

Russia’s postal services market soared 34.85percent on the year in monetary terms in 2003 to 28.2 billion rubles, Leonid Reiman, acting Communications and IT Minister told a ministry board meeting Tuesday. Turnover of traditional Russian postal services operators jumped 35.5% on the year to 26.3 billion rubles, Reiman said without elaborating.
