DHL Opens New Cargo Hub At Jkia, Kenya

DHL Express has opened a new air express facility at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The facility, Kenya’s largest-ever, is aimed at bolstering DHL Kenya’s position as a transport hub for the East and Central Africa region. The 2200 sq metre facility will operate 24 hours to consolidate inbound and outbound express shipments, and trans-shipment to the DHL Global network, including East and Central Africa, South Africa and the Middle East Region. “The opening of DHL’s new hub is an important milestone for company. As the largest hub of its kind in Kenya, with Customs and Excise personnel on site to manage import/export processing, it will greatly enhance the company’s position as a distribution and transport hub for this region,” said Howard Goldfield, DHL Commercial Manager for Equatorial Africa.

UPS denies bid to cut Airbus order

United Parcel Service has denied reports that it was seeking to cancel part of a USD10 billion order for 90 passenger jets from European aircraft maker Airbus.

A spokesman for the Atlanta-based package delivery company told the Associated Press that UPS planned to abide by the order and the delivery schedule originally agreed to with Airbus.

DHL launches time definite delivery (TDD) service to China

DHL has launched its Time Definite Delivery (TDD) product offering to the Chinese city of Shanghai.

DHL’s Time Definite Delivery products comprises StartDay and MidDay Express which offer customers the latest possible collection times for early next-day deliveries. DHL StartDay Express offers next day door-to-door delivery by 9.00am. MidDay Express offers next day door-to-door delivery by 12 noon.

UK Royal Mail/Cranfield Report identifies GBP200 million retail black hole

The UK’s retail sector wastes up to GBP200 million a year on the return of goods through the supply chain, according to a report commissioned by Royal Mail.

The research was undertaken by Cranfield School of Management, Sheffield Hallam University and The Institute of Logistics and Transport. The report “Not Many Happy Returns”, attributes the wasted millions to inefficient supply chain practices surrounding the return of unwanted, unsold or damaged goods.

Customers store products at Stargate in Lichfield alongside Palletways central hub, where it is picked and processed against individual orders for delivery via the national distribution network.

UK Royal Mail to post GBP200m profit

Royal Mail, the former postal service monopoly now facing growing competition, is set to make operating profits of GBP200m this year despite the GBP40m cost of last autumn’s unofficial strikes.

But Adam Crozier, chief executive, and chairman Allan Leighton are warning government and staff that the state-owned group faces formidable obstacles before meeting its goal of at least GPB400m pre-tax earnings by the end of the next financial year.

No large scale closures of post offices in Germany this year

Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman of German postal service operator Deutsche Post, has said in a newspaper interview that his group is planning no large-scale closures of post offices across Germany this year. He also said that his group would not necessarily go through with its plans of reducing the number of post offices in Germany from 13,000 to 12,000.

German and Swiss postal workers threaten further disruptions

Deutsche Post has rejected union demands, and the Swiss postal union has warned that failure by Swiss Post management to make concessions could result in further nationwide action.

Deutsche Post workers have not ruled out further work disruptions to protest against benefit cuts to 67,000 employees.
