An Post Loses Roadside Letter Box Decision

An Post has threatened a price rise following yesterday’s decision by the communications regulator that the company cannot force customers to accept roadside letter boxes. ComReg chairwoman, Ms Etain Doyle, said An Post would be breaking the law if it went ahead with plans to oblige customers to accept deliveries to a postbox at the side of the road in place of a doorstep service.

TPG: No More Acquisitions in Germany This Year

Dutch mail and express company TPG NV said on Tuesday it did not plan to make any more acquisitions in Germany in 2003, even though it had said late last year it was considering buying a logistics business there. Chief Executive Peter Bakker told journalists that TPG was happy for now to have its management in Germany focus on a company-wide revamp of logistics operations. ‘I would not expect any acquisitions (in Germany) this year,’ he said.

European Commission gives the go-ahead to the creation of a joint venture for distribution to kiosks in Italy

The European Commission has authorised the creation of a joint venture by Holding di Partecipazioni (HdP) and De Agostini, two players on the Italian media market. The joint venture, called RCS Diffusione, will distribute to local outlets throughout the country both newspapers and magazines and a range of other products (mobile phone top-up cards, batteries and personal hygiene products). The operation does not give rise to competition concerns.

Spanish Azkar Plans 120 Mln Euro Capacity Investment by 2005

Spanish transport and packaging company Transportes Azkar (Azkar) plans to invest 120 mln euro ($138.43 mln) by 2005 to expand its capacity, it was reported on May 13, 2003.

The project will be presented for approval to the board of directors of the company in July 2003. The plan includes acquisition of land plots and construction of warehousing platforms.

'Sabotage' threat to UK rural post offices

Fresh fears were expressed for the future of the Westcountry’s post offices yesterday after new figures revealed that just one in six people are signing up for a scheme designed to safeguard the network. The figures, released by the Department of Work and Pensions, suggest that the final take-up of the new Post Office card account could be so low that many more post offices will be forced out of business. The Department of Work and Pensions has been accused of sabotaging the scheme by making it difficult for pensioners and others to sign up.

Postcomm seeks views on changes to two of UK Royal Mail’s services

Postcomm today sought the views of mail users on proposals from Royal Mail to make changes to two of its services – Special Delivery and Standard Parcels.
The services are included in Royal Mail’s licence, which was issued by Postcomm, and the proposed changes need Postcomm’s approval before they can be implemented.
