Portugal braces for two-day postal strike

Mail will go undelivered on Wednesday and Friday in Portugal as employees of loss-making state postal firm CTT strike against plans to reduce staff and privatize some services, postal workers’ union SNTCT said. The union, which represents some 17,000 postal workers, said in a statement the job action is a protest against “the handing over of postal offices and services to the private sector, the reduction in staff levels and the elimination of benefits.”

Royal Mail to outsource GBP1.5bn IT operations

Royal Mail is preparing to outsource its nationwide IT operations in a deal worth up to pounds 1.5bn. The company is expected this week to sign a 10-year agreement with a consortium including CSC, the American computer services group, and BT, the telecoms giant. The deal involves the transfer of 2,000 jobs out of the Royal Mail group. The move is part of Royal Mail’s drive to focus on its core operations and to slash operating costs. The group has already outsourced building operations and maintenance as well as employee health services.

The first phase of deregulation intended to open up 30 per cent of Royal Mail’s letter market to competition is under way. While it is far too early to say how much impact this has had, a question that does need addressing is how direct mailers are going to respond. Will they be looking to switch to other postal carriers? Will they be able to adopt a more flexible approach to their mailing schedules? And what will be the best way to buy in this new, competitive environment? A number of mailing houses remain wary of new postal carriers entering the market, and from what they have seen so far, cannot see them persuading mailers to switch from Royal Mail.

China Post and TPG join forces in strategic partnership

The State Post Bureau of China (China Post) and mail, express and logistics company TPG N.V. have today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), that will provide the foundation for a broad strategic partnership. This builds upon the successful partnership between China Post and TPG in the express business in China, that was entered into in 2000.

TPG reports steady first quarter 2003 results

TPG has today reported its first quarter 2003 results. CEO Peter Bakker said
“TPG’s performance in the first quarter of 2003 again demonstrates that we deliver solid results despite difficult economic circumstances. The like for like growth in net income was in line with our expectations and our free cash flow has improved to record levels. Mail and Express continue to perform strongly.”
Financial highlights include: net income excluding pension increase up 2.8% (4.2% at constant exchange rates), revenue growth of 0.7% (5.7% at constant exchange rates) record cash flow performance: free cash flow up 56.1%, strong Mail performance due to tight cost control, record first quarter result in Express, pressure on Logistics margin continues.

USPS announces new mail contract aimed at better service

The U.S. Postal Service today awarded 18 competitively bid air transportation contracts to 34 airlines. The value of these contracts will be dependent on the
individual air carrier’s price, capacity and service performance. The contracts will take effect June 28 and are expected to increase efficiency and improve service. Total dollar value of the contracts will not be available until the end of each fiscal year when total mail volumes flown by the airlines is known. Last year, the Postal Service paid the airlines approximately USD370 million.

Minister delivers rural funding for N Ireland post offices

Ulster’s struggling rural post offices were yesterday given a cash boost of GBP750,000. NIO Minister Des Browne announced the funding after a News Letter campaign highlighted how postmasters in rural communities were fighting for survival. Mr Browne said it was important people in the most disadvantaged urban communities continue to have access to the vital services provided by post offices. Consumer watchdog, Postwatch Northern Ireland, said the funding was “a much needed boost for post offices in deprived areas”.
