Surcharge raises Canadian parcel post rates

Canada Post has quietly pumped up the price of its parcel service by tacking on a 2.25-per-cent fuel surcharge. Canada Post spokesman John Caines said the new fee is meant to cover losses incurred due to recent hikes in the cost of gasoline. “We have been suffering for many months with high fuel prices,” Caines said. “The fuel prices are extremely high and we have to pay these prices to move our products.” The new fuel surcharge will adds 22 cents to a $10 package.

UK Royal Mail likely to avoid big fine over complaint

The prospect of Royal Mail paying a hefty fine for anti-competitive behaviour receded yesterday after the Office of Fair Trading decided not to investigate a “super complaint” brought against the operator by Postwatch, the consumer watchdog, last month. The OFT referred the complaint to Postcomm, the regulator, meaning the issues raised “no longer have the status of a super-complaint”, Royal Mail said. Under the Enterprise Act, yet to come into full force, Postcomm is not empowered to deal with the complaint in such a way.

Poste Italiane Launches Bond Issue

Poste Italiane, the Italian post office, has launched a bond issue ‘Centro Aprile 2003′ which can be subscribed to until April 29. The bonds will mature in three years’ time, with a yield is linked to the Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 index. The minimum value of bonds to be bought is 1,000 euros.

UK mail consolidation complaint referred to Postcomm

The super-complaint from postal watchdog Postwatch has been referred by the OFT to the industry regulatory body Postcomm. The complaint, made on 18 March, related to Royal Mail’s Mailsort service. This provides a discount for businesses that carry out their own initial mail sorting for large volumes of mail. The complaint alleged that Royal Mail was abusing its dominant position in the market for delivering letters to favour its own mail consolidation business over its Mailsort service.

Ex-UK post chief advises Deloitte

Former Royal Mail chief John Roberts has been taken on by Deloitte Consulting as an adviser on the postal industry. Roberts, who will help the post industry team to develop business across Europe, says the postal sector faces “major challenges ahead. With the advent of e-mail and e-commerce, postal companies not only compete with new technologies but must embrace them if they are to succeed”, he says. Roberts, who joined the Post Office, as it was then called, in 1967, became chief executive in 1995 and retired last December.
