Scottish post offices can take a pew as church leaders unveil proposal

A revolutionary plan to save Scotland’s threatened post offices will be unveiled by church leaders today. In a ground breaking decision the Church of Scotland is inviting congregations to use church halls and other buildings as new homes for hundreds of small post offices facing closure. The “pension and a prayer” plan, which is expected to be given approval, will be considered by the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland when they meet in Edinburgh next month.

Korea Post CEO Named Koo Yung-bo

Korea Post, a semi-state postal service operator, has named Koo Yung-bo, 52, as president, succeeding Lee Kyo-yong. In a statement, Koo said he would take a bold step to improve the postal service‘s competitiveness, seeking the real value of the postal service. The postal service operator, which has been in transition for partial privatization since 2000 as part of the government‘s reform measures, is expected to draw up a mid-term business proposal in a month based on the instruction offered by Information and Communication Minister Chin Dae-je.

DHL plots India expansion

DHL Worldwide Express, a unit of Deutsche Post World Net, plans to invest millions in India for new infrastructure, customer service centers, and warehouses. “We are looking at India very, very positively,” said Country Manager Chris Callen in Mumbai. “India represents one of the four key markets for us – the others are China, Japan and Australia.” Callen didn’t give specific investment figures, but said these would be in “many millions of euros.”

Asian Mail Users Demand Improved Postal Services

At a specially arranged customer forum, held on the eve of the World Mail & Express Asia conference and exhibition in Singapore recently, a number of major mail users highlighted poor service quality, particularly in terms of cross border mailings, as a significant factor affecting their businesses. The seminar brought together a group of major mail customers, including Readers Digest, The Economist, Health & Science Inc., McGraw Hill, MLA International Mailing, UNICEF and World Scientific, and represented a total annual spend on mail of some USD66 million.

Opus Trust acquires UK Royal Mail's share in Optecon UK

Royal Mail has sold its 50% holding in Optecon the joint venture formed with Opus Trust in November 2001. The 130-staff company was formed in the early 1990s as a transactional mailing division within Royal Mail, but became a separate firm in November 2001 in a joint venture. Optecon operations director Jon Pollett said: ‘We now have a more commercial market edge and we’re no longer focused on selling off the back of Royal Mail.’
