Analysts say Airborne deal faces tough battle

Industry analysts say DHL Worldwide’s proposed acquisition of Airborne Inc. will receive intense scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Greg Burns of J.P. Morgan Chase believes the deal will be approved because of its impact on competition despite fierce opposition from FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service. Other analysts were more skeptical. Scott Flower of Salomon Smith Barney gave the deal a 60 percent chance of approval, but noted that it will also be subject to political pressures.

Brazil Post nears online shopping mall launch

Correios, the Brazilian post office, is gearing up to open an online shopping ma where small and mid-sized local companies can set up affordable storefronts.

Dubbed CorreiosNet Shopping, the new virtual mall should launch either this mont or next depending on what the post’s top brass decides.

Correios officials say that the online mall has been designed to provide all the technical, commercial and logistical infrastructure required to operate a reliab high-quality, secure, low-cost e-business.

Fortec can now work in daylight

Pallet network operator Fortec has expanded its central hub in Rugby to more than 5,000sq metres, more than doubling capacity to 2,200 pallets. The revamped hub will be Fortec’s first facility independent of parent company Geodis, which has moved its operation to an adjacent building. 'Small is beautiful' for growing network

Pall-Ex, the UK’s largest pallet network, believes the slowing economy won’t damage its prospects for growth. Alan Cramley, sales and marketing director, said last week: “People may be saying the economy is quiet, but that means small deliveries more often, which suits our typical consignment size of one to three pallets.” The company is confident of matching last year’s 40% growth rate and last week moved into its new GBP10m (EUR14.5m) hub near Coalville in Leicestershire.

Emirates Post signs postal agreements with Morocco, Algerian and Tunisia

Emirates Post recently signed agreements with the postal authorities of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia for handling money transfer, parcels and the Mumtaz service between the UAE and the three countries. The agreements were signed during a visit by a high level delegation led by Mr. Abdulla Al Daboos, Director General of Emirates Post, to the three countries, as part of Emirates Post’s strategy to enhance postal cooperation and explore further business opportunities in the region.
