DHL expects China to become its largest market in Asia Pacific in 3 years

Deutsche Post World Net AG subsidiary DHL said it expects China to become its largest market in the Asia Pacific region within two to three years. Chief operating officer for Asia Pacific John Mullen said the company’s business volume in China is currently growing at a rate of 45-50 pct year-on-year.
Mullen said DHL plans to add some 10-11 collection and distribution points in China this year and invest further in infrastructure and technologies in the region.

US Postal Service sets record for on-time delivery

The US Postal Service continued its drive for excellence by raising the national average for on-time delivery of First-Class Mail with a next-day delivery standard to an unprecedented 95 percent. It achieved this score during Quarter II (Nov. 30, 2002 through Feb.17, 2003) while delivering to a record 140 million addresses during one of the worst winters in recent memory. The record breaking achievements were reported at the monthly meeting of the Postal Board of Governors here. This now extends the national average of at least 93 percent to five-and-a-half consecutive years.

Neopost publishes annual results

Neopost, the European leader and number two world-wide supplier of mailing solutions, today announced record growth in sales and profitability in its 2002 financial year (ended 31 January 2003). The year was a busy one on the acquisitions front, with the completion of the Ascom Hasler and Stielow deals. These gave Neopost a new dimension with boosted sales to more than E800m on a pro-forma basis. Sales growth came with a surge in profitability, with EBIT up 60% and net income up 83%.

First major reform in Modern Postal System creates Japan Post

The governmental Postal Services Agency became Japan Post, a public corporation, on Tuesday, marking the first major reform of Japan’s modern postal system.

Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told reporters Tuesday that launching Japan Post is the same as “having made the first step in privatizing the postal services,” a pet project he views as a key pillar of his cabinet’s structural reform plans.

The balance of Japan’s “yucho” postal savings at the end of fiscal 2002 was down 2.6 pct from a year before at 233,192.4 billion yen, Japan Post said Tuesday.

French finance minister faces post office questions

The French finance minister, Francis Mer, and his industry counterpart, Nicole Fontaine, will both appear before the French senate’s economic affairs commission today to answer questions about the future of the French post office (La Poste). Mr Mer is expected to be asked, among other things, about the possibility of expanding La Poste’s ranging of banking services, with the organisation acting as a distributor for the financial products of other companies.

Autumn date for UK GBP40m postal centre

Work is well under way on Royal Mail’s new distribution hub near Rugby. The GBP 40 million Crick site, at the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal, will be operational by the autumn and will employ nearly 600 people. The site will be at the centre of Royal Mail’s new transport network which will use roads, rail and air. Mail from all over the country will be processed at the site, which will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
