TNT revenues grow in Russia

TNT Express delivery service upped its revenues from the Russian market by 40 percent last year and doubled its volumes over the past two years, a company official said Tuesday.

TNT saw growth in all its services in Russia last year, Harro van Graafeiland, the country general manager said at a news conference, without providing exact volumes.

UPS, in its first year of eligibility as part of the S&P 500, has been named in BusinessWeek magazine’s BusinessWeek 50.

The list, published in the magazine’s special annual spring issue, recognizes America’s best-performing major companies. The starting point for the magazine’s editors always is the S&P 500, to which UPS was added last year.

Deutsche Post worldwide still aiming for the summit

When Deutsche Post said yesterday it would buy the ground operations of Airborne, the third-largest US air express delivery company, for USD1.05bn, the German postal operator closed a hole in its ability to deliver ground packages in the US and caught up with United Parcel Service and FedEx, two of its fiercest rivals. The move marked the latest triumph for Klaus Zumwinkel, Deutsche Post’s chief executive. Airborne, Mr Zumwinkel said, would be another step towards transforming the once-creaky state monopoly into the world’s top logistics group. But observers worry that Deutsche Post may stretch itself thin as it shops around.

OCA up for auction

The 10 banks that started administrating the postal company OCA just a few weeks ago are to put the company up for auction.
These banks are the main creditors of the Exxel Group, owner of OCA. Credit Suisse, First Boston, Deutsche bank of America, UBS, Citibank, Rio, Bisel, ING and JP Morgan Chase Manhattan lent US$195million to the Exxel Groupin 1997 for the acquisition of OCA which provides clearing services with a nearly 80 percent market share

FTC to closely monitor Japan Post

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) will closely observe the operations of Japan Post, a public postal corporation to be launched April 1, as it is considered a private firm under the Antimonopoly Law, a senior FTC official said Wednesday. “We will closely monitor (the organization) so that fair competition takes place (in postal services),” Akio Yamada, secretary general of the FTC, said at a press conference.

Minister might stamp out South African postal tariffs rise

Consumers will pay 10% more to post a standard letter from next month, with the postal regulator having approved another hefty rise in postal tariffs.

The move could bring the SA Post Office under government’s spotlight following concern expressed recently by Public Enterprises Minister Jeff Radebe at the effect of administered price increases on inflation.
