Chairman of UK Post Office Ltd appointed

Mike Hodgkinson, the outgoing chief executive of BAA plc, has been appointed Chairman of Post Office Limited, the retailing business of Royal Mail Group, it was announced today. His appointment to the Royal Mail Board was announced in November last year as one of four new non-executive directors. Mr Hodgkinson will take up his additional role on May 1 and he will also become the Royal Mail Board’s senior independent director.

RR Donnelley acquires Momentum Logistics Inc

RR Donnelley has acquired Momentum Logistics Inc a Florida-based provider of package distribution services in the Southeastern United States. The acquisition gives R.R. Donnelley Logistics direct access to hundreds of local entry points in the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) network in the Southeast. The investment improves capabilities, enables further growth in package logistics and improves the efficiency and control of print shipments for RR Donnelley’s print customers.

Exel UK wins contract with Sun Microsystems Inc

Exel, the British logistics provider, announced Wednesday that it has won a multi-million dollar contract with Sun Microsystems Inc.

Courier companies may be forced out of Mexico

Major express shippers like UPS, DHL and FedEx may be forced out of Mexico, reports Mexico City’s El Financiero. Mexican lawmakers are considering mandating that “natural or legal Mexican citizens” operate federal cargo, courier and express services and restricting foreign stakes in such companies. Public hearings should begin March 15.

UK Royal Mail price increase postpone

Royal Mail today advised customers that the postal price increase proposed from April 17 will be postponed because of a decision by the regulator, Postcomm, to extend the consultation period for price control. Postcomm has delayed the deadline for the consultation period to March 21, following representations from the consumer body Postwatch. Royal Mail had previously announced April 17 as the proposed date for its increases, subject to agreement with the regulator on the price control package, but there will now be no change to prices of any Royal Mail services on that date.

UK Postal union to vote on industrial action

Allan Leighton’s struggle with the unions at the Royal Mail took a turn for the worse last night with warnings of industrial action by postal workers.

But the Royal Mail chairman was boosted by an independent report arguing the communications workers union should end its boycott of partnership boards aimed at improving relations between the two sides.
