EU Commissioners want to impose VAT on British postal services

The price of sending a first-class letter is set to rocket because European bureaucrats want to impose VAT on British postal services.

EU Commissioners in Brussels are proposing the tax – which could add 17.5 per cent to the postage cost of all letters and parcels – because they want member states to have the same policies on postal services.

But the idea has already drawn outrage from Royal Mail and consumer groups.

UK Royal Mail charges bilingual companies twice for redirecting mail

The postal services’ consumer watchdog has condemned the Royal Mail for penalising companies with bilingual names which use its redirection service.

Royal Mail’s present policy means companies with a bilingual name have to pay GBP126 a year to redirect letters, when companies with one name only pay GBP63. Eifion Pritchard, chairman of Postwatch Wales, said, “This situation is totally unacceptable. The Royal Mail is forcing companies with a bilingual name to pay twice for redirecting their post”.

Deutsche Post to Invest Millions in Asia

German postal group Deutsche Post World Net said on Friday it plans to invest millions of dollars in Asia this year as part of its aim to maintain double-digit revenue growth in the region. ‘It’s in the three-digit million area for one year, in U.S. dollars,’ Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman of the board of management of Deutsche Post, told a news conference in Singapore. ‘In Asia, we are growing double-digit in revenues so we need more people and more investments.’

UK Royal Mail Postal Service becoming more reliable

Mail deliveries are becoming more reliable after an increase in the number of letters arriving on time, new figures showed today.

The number of first class letters delivered a day after posting was 91.8% between last April and December, a 2.5% improvement over the previous year.

Second class mail performance was 98.3% over the same period, up by 0.6% on the previous year.
