Deutsche Post World Net strengthens its foreign logistics business with acquisitions in Chile and in Turkey

Deutsche Post World Net is acquiring the Commercial Safeway SA company, headquartered in Santiago/Chile. With its 40 percent market share, the logistics company is the market leader in air freight export of perishable goods in Chile. Deutsche Post has also acquired Berben Ekspress Nakliyat, one of the leading Turkish logistics companies headquartered in Istanbul. The purchase is contingent upon the approval of the local cartel authorities. Berben Ekspress has been active for the Group since 1987 as a subcontractor to Deutsche Post subsidiary Danzas in Turkey.

TNT forecasts R$1BIL income in Brazil

The Brazilian subsidiary of the logistic company TNT, which registered an income of R$237mil in 2002, 17% up 2001, plans to reach R$280mil, an increase of 20% this year. The group expects the automotive sector, which currently represents 80% of the turnover, to be responsible for 50% and the remainder 50% coming from the electronic products and consumer goods logistic division.

Correos Spain introduces new brand name and image

Victor Calvo-Sotelo, president of Correos (Spain) has officially introduced today the company’s new brand name and image. The word “Telegraphs” will be removed from the company’s name and the word “Correos” will become a commercial trademark. Deutsche Post AG’s inter-German parcel business still loss-stricken

Deutsche Post AG’s inter-German parcel business is evidently still loss-stricken. The German magazine ‘Wirtschaftswoche’ (6.2) reported that the loss amounts to around 2m euros per day, according to sources at board level. However, the post immediately denied the contents of the report, but the company’s press office declined to comment on the result and instead pointed to the positive overall result of the express segment, to which the parcel division belongs.

French La Poste pleased with development of European parcel and express business

So far, the French La Poste is basically pleased with the development of its European parcel and express business. At a press conference last week the company announced that the brands and companies grouped together under the roof of GeoPost Holding had enjoyed a positive development during 2002. An estimate ventured by the CEP News sets their turnover at over 2.1bn euros, which amounts to an approx. 5% increase.

Tunnel rail link must allow for freight too

The Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) has refuted suggestions that the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) is not giving enough priority to freight services.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) claimed that a consultation paper produced by the SRA on the use of the CTRL only refers to freight usage of the link on one page out of 28.

Van drivers accused of cashing in on London charges

Parcel delivery companies were accused yesterday of “blatant profiteering” after announcing plans to raise prices in response to London’s congestion charge. Many leading couriers, including Securicor Omega Express, Parceline and Nightspeed, are to charge up to GBP1 extra per delivery in the restricted zone to cover the toll. The move was attacked by traders whose businesses depend on sending and receiving stock. They say that each van, which will pay GBP5 a day, will make enough deliveries in the zone to cover the extra expense with a healthy margin to spare.
