Cofinoga and French Postal Services Group La Poste in ATM deal

Customers of French consumer credit company Cofinoga can now use the ATMs of French postal services group La Poste for cash withdrawals, following an agreement announced last month. With 4,025 ATMs, La Poste has the third largest network in France after Credit Agricole and Groupe Caisse d’Epargne.

Cofinoga, owned by French department store Galeries Lafayette and BNP’s consumer finance subsidiary Cetelem, is the third largest private label issuer in France with 9.0 million cards and loans of (euro) 7.8 billion at the end of 2001.

UK Regulator grilled on Royal Mail

The mail regulator faced a grilling from MPs yesterday over proposals to liberalise the mail market while curbing Royal Mail’s own prices. Graham Corbett, Postcomm regulator, told a select committee headed by Martin Stanley that his 240-page document on price controls and increases for Royal Mail was not “regulatory treacle”, as it was dubbed by Allan Leighton, Royal Mail chairman. “What monopolists think of as regulatory treacle is what most consumers think of as proper oversight,” Mr Corbett retorted.

TPG German unit aims to expand letter delivery network in Germany

TPG NV’s German unit EP Europost AG aims to expand its letter delivery network in Germany and have a market share of up to 10 pct by 2007 for letters weighing over 100 grams, EP Europost’s management board chairman Alex Eglseer said in a pre-release of his interview with weekly WirtschaftsWoche magazine. Eglseer also said by end of this year it wants to sell stamps for letters of over 100 grams at prices that are 15-35 pct below those sold by Deutsche Post World Net. AG.

Romania to Host 2004 UPU Congress

The Universal Postal Union has fixed the venue for the 23rd Universal Postal Congress. The UPU and the Government of Romania announced that the next UPU Congress will take place in the Romanian capital of Bucharest in 2004. This follows an earlier decision by Côte d’Ivoire to withdraw from organizing the Congress in Abidjan as a result of the current political situation in the country. The dates of the Congress still need to be finalized but the event will probably take place during the second half of September/beginning of October 2004.

Posta Uganda plans door to door mail delivery

Posta Uganda is finally going to start door to door delivery of mail General Manager David Kitongo revealed Friday in an interview with Sunday Monitor. He said that they would use the local councils to deliver mails to customers in their locations. Local councils involved in the distribution will be paid for their co-operation in the delivery of ordinary mail. Posta Uganda will install mailboxes in strategic locations throughout the country.

Dutch Govt to give up KPN and TPG golden shares in long term

The Dutch government intends to give up its special veto rights in Royal KPN NV and TPG NV over the long term, but for the moment still sees holding on to the so-called golden shares as in the public interest, according to a letter from finance minister Hans Hoogervorst to parliament. The minister was responding to the European Commission’s recent request for the Dutch government to come up within two months with measures to end its special influence at the two companies and give up the golden shares. According to the EU, the preferred shares obstruct the free flow of capital and cross-border mergers in the EU.
