Ceska Posta goes on-line with registered mail service

Ceska Posta was to make available to the public on Saturday an electronic alternative to ordinary registered mail using technology it has largely developed itself.

Although its benefits include faster, direct delivery, the new electronic mail program can only work between senders and receivers who are both signed up for the service. The cost of a basic Registered Electronic Mail (REP) package starts at Kc 600 per year and includes a monthly 100-megabyte limit of transferred data, or around 1,800 registered e-mails per month.

Mail regulator caves in over stamp prices

Graham Corbett, chairman of Postcomm, the postal regulator, will this week tell Royal Mail that it will be allowed to raise the price of first and second class stamps by one penny.

Corbett will also reveal he is prepared to drop a number of onerous requirements that were first aired in his controversial three-year pricing proposal last October. But he will fall short of removing all his initial proposals and he wants to ensure that Britain’s postal business remains a competitive arena.

Parly Post privatised strike threat over switch

Royal Mail workers may go on strike to stop Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) privatising the Holyrood postal service.

Civil servants are set to hand the lucrative contract to deliver MSPs’ mail to an English firm.

The pounds 1million contract will go to Business Post in Slough.

But the postal workers union CWU will ballot on industrial action over the move, which could see 13 Holyrood postmen made redundant.

Royal Mail to appeal in fight with Postcomm

The Royal Mail is preparing to launch an appeal to the Competition Commission, the senior competition watchdog, over price controls on its services drawn up by the regulator, Postcomm. The watchdog will deliver its final verdict on the new price control regime this week and has refused to make some of the compromises demanded by the Royal Mail. Postcomm is thought to have resisted lobbying by the company for the ability to “rebalance” prices by raising its charges for some services while lowering others.

An Post blames losses for refusal to sign European agreement on international tarrifs

An Post has refused to sign a new European agreement on international postal tariffs, citing heavy losses it sustains for delivering foreign mail.

The State postal group is understood to be concerned that a new Remuneration for Exchange of International Mails (REIMS) package might expose it to greater losses for delivering post from Britain, the biggest source of international mail.

Risk to universal postal service news digest

The future of the universal postal service could be under threat from rules that give circumstances under which Royal Mail would not have to deliver post to every home, Postwatch has warned. The consumer watchdog yesterday said proposals made by regulator Postcomm may give Royal Mail an opportunity “to reduce costs by reducing the number of deliveries to remote spots”. It called for a more precise definition of remote addresses where Royal Mail will not be expected to deliver to the door every day.
