Postal talks point to higher prices

The postal regulator is to hold a series of talks with Royal Mail during the next few days, raising hopes that the group will be allowed to raise prices on a range of items.

Postcomm has already said that it is prepared to meet Royal Mail’s request to raise first and second-class stamps by 1p.

Deutsche Post adjusts products and prices

From 1 March 2003, Deutsche Post will simplify the dispatch of counter parcels and reduce weight steps from 4 to 3. Thus, in the future the weight steps will be up to 5 kg, over 5 kg to 10 kg, as well as over 10 kg to 20 kg. This also generates new pricing structures for all domestic and international parcel and express shipments, including an increase in the charge for a small packet sent within Germany from EUR 3.68 to EUR 4.10.

Prestons wins with Pall-Ex

Prestons of Potto says it has secured twp new clients since joining Pall-Ex at the beginning of the year covering Teesside, and it now hopes to expand the service area.
Annie Preston, chairman of Prestons of Potto, says: “We operate in seven regions and I see no reason why our service with Pall-Ex cannot be expanded to these areas.”
Preston says it took the decision to join a pallet network after turning down small part loads which it was unable to handle.

An Post seeks postbox supplier

An Post is inviting expressions of interest from suppliers and manufacturers to provide 500,000 roadside post boxes.

It follows the controversial announcement to erect US-style delivery boxes at the bottom of driveways and lanes, designed to save the postal service up to €35m a year.

The idea is to then begin a tender process for the supply of the boxes.

The main specifications will be durability, quality, security and design.

Royal Mail revises pricing plans

The Royal Mail is revising its proposals on size-based pricing after consultations with the magazine industry.

The proposals – which looked at replacing the pricing system, which is largely based on weight, with a size and weight-based structure – sent shockwaves through the publishing world when they were announced last year.

Such changes would mean that a tabloid-size magazine would be charged more than an A5 format title.

Deutsche Post eyes stake in Chinese logistics group Sinotrans

Deutsche Post, the semi-privatised German postal authority, wants to acquire a stake in the Chinese state-run logistics firm, Sinotrans, a board member of the German group said in a newspaper interview published Wednesday.

“We’ve expressed our strong interest in a strategic partnership to the Chinese government,” Deutsche Post board member Uwe Doerken told the Financial Times Deutschland.

“We hope our leading market position and our long-standing joint venture with Sinontrans will make us the preferred candidate for a stake,” he added.

14 January 2003 Swiss Post International (SPI) – has bought Priority Post a Baltimore/Washington D.C. area based provider of international mailings and specialized in the pre-sorting and processing of bulk mailings. SPI has had branches in New York and Los Angeles since 1998.
