Post price rise for UK

The cost of posting heavier mail and standard parcels is to increase in the New Year, the Royal Mail announced today.

First and second class post above 350g in weight will rise adding 1p to an item which costs £1.30 now.

Royal Mail give temporary jobs boost

More than 600 Christmas staff have been hired by the Royal Mail in Birmingham to handle up to four million items a day.

The army of temporary recruits has been put in place as staff across the Birmingham postcode district process around 24.5 million items in the countdown to Christmas. Meanwhile, a total of 1.5 million parcels will pass through the West Midlands this week alone as volumes soar by almost 20 per cent in the last few days before Christmas.

A Birmingham Royal Mail spokesman said: ‘We expect to handle around 24.5 million items during our busiest week, with over four million on the busiest day.

NIPOST owed N4.9m by customers in Benue region

The Nigerian Postal Services (NIPOST), is being owed a total of N4,963,000 by customers in the Benue territory of the organisation.

The amount which is being owed through charges on Post Office Boxes, Private Mail Bags and Special Delivery Services, according to the Area Postal Manager, Pat Onuekwusi, has retarded efforts of the new NIPOST management to fully meet its set targets.

In an address she delivered at a key customers “Consultative forum” which held at the conference hall of Benue hotel, Makurdi, the Area Postal Manager said inspite of the huge debt, Nipost in the territory was able to generate over N1 million between years 2001 and 2002, a figure she said was hundred percent improvement above what was realised in the previous year.

Cost of international mail from Ireland set to rise

Consumers face yet further price increase after the Commission for Communications Regulation sanctioned increases in the cost of sending mail abroad by An Post. The changes, which had been requested by An Post in October, will see the cost of sending a standard letter to Britain increase from 41 cent to 50 cent, while the cost of sending a similar letter to other European countries will now be 57 cent, up from 44 cent.

R.R. Donnelley Logistics to Open Large, Fully-Automated Distribution Facility In York

R.R. Donnelley Logistics, a leader in print, mail and package distribution, is enhancing its consolidation and distribution network by opening a 670,000 square foot facility in York, PA. The move is part of the company’s business strategy to continuously improve service and expand capacity to support the rapidly increasing demand for its services.

The new “Super Center” will be completed in a phased approach. In phase one, the new facility will combine R.R. Donnelley Logistics package operations in the Northeastern region of the United States. Customers in the Northeast will see their home delivery service improve by up to two days within the region, and one day for the balance of the country.

Courier announces sale of courier custom publishing

Courier Corporation (Nasdaq:CRRC), today announced the sale of the assets of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Courier Custom Publishing, Inc. to ProQuest Information and Learning Co. of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Courier Custom Publishing provides customized teaching materials including multi-publisher coursepacks as well as out-of-print book reproductions and books authorized by professors for classroom use. The proceeds of the sale were $1.5 million and will result in an after-tax gain of approximately $0.8 million or $.15 per diluted share in Courier’s first quarter which ends on December 28, 2002. The sale is expected to increase the company’s previous earnings guidance for fiscal year 2003 by $.15 per diluted share (the amount of the gain) to $3.50 to $3.65 per diluted share and reduce previous guidance on fiscal year 2003 sales to $209 to $215 million.

Bangkok Minister set to reject hike in postal rate

The Information and Communications Technology minister will most likely reject a proposal to increase the regular domestic postage rate to three baht from two baht unless the Communications Authority of Thailand comes up with more sound reasons.

The CAT maintains that the increase is necessary as “part of the master plan to improve postal services”.It has been asked to submit proposals to increase future revenue and give more plausible reasons for the proposed increase, which was rejected last month by ICT Minister Surapong Suebwonglee.

He said that unless the agency came up with acceptable details supporting the proposal, he would not forward it to the cabinet for consideration.
