TNT to embrace more of eastern Europe and serve extra airports

A three-year expansion plan will see TNT covering seven more countries in eastern Europe and serving 12 additional airports.
In a rare media briefing in London, Alan Jones, group MD of TNT Express, said: “We want to build on our strengths in Europe and grow in the rest of the world.” The integrator now has 500 depots in 31 countries, deploys its own aircraft at 55 airports and uses commercial lift elsewhere, enabling it to offer service to 208 countries.
Later average departure times from most airports meant good cut-off times for customers, Jones said, and in some cases – he quoted Milan’s Linate airport and Tegel at Berlin – TNT was the only freight carrier in key central locations.

Profit leap for Nightfreight

Overnight freight and parcels courier Nightfreight managed a 32% increase in profit on the back of sales that were only 13.7% higher in 2001.
The figures, achieved in a highly competitive market place, suggest that the company’s management, who led an MBO early last year, were on the right lines with their subsequent restructuring of the business. And independent research has shown that Nightfreight now has the biggest share of the UK mixed parcels and IDW (irregular dimension and weight) market.
CEO Robert Kelly, who led the Barclays-backed MBO, said: “We recognise there is still a long way to go but by freeing ourselves from the shackles of a plc, we have made impressive strides over the past 12 months.

The Postal Authority is demanding that the Communications Ministry immediate stop “illegal” mail delivery by a private bulk-mail company and inform the operators that they are breaking the law.

Possible Fine Over Mailer Complaint

It is reported that Deutsche Post, the German postal service operator, may face heavy fines if it is ruled that a decision by the ministry for economic affairs to prolong the company’s monopoly on letter delivery for two years was unlawful. It is said that in 2000, when the decision was made, officials warned against the ministerial decision which ignored a demand by the postal and telecommunications regulatory body for lower postage charges. The German wholesale and retail association BGA had lodged a complaint against the prices imposed by Deutsche Post for letter delivery, adding that the excessive charges had been imposed with the support of the ministry in view of the income that they brought. The court hearing is due on August 7. The BGA believes that other complaints may follow its own.

Consignia a ‘chronic failure’, says chief

IN AN astonishing act of corporate honesty, the chairman of Consignia – soon to revert to its old name of Royal Mail – did a “Ratner” yesterday, admitting his company was a “chronic failure”.
Allan Leighton admitted that “you cannot imagine a company which is a monopoly, which has £6 billion of sales and manages to lose £1.2 million a day”.
The part-time chairman, who is on the board of eight other companies, made a scathing attack on the company just days after executives revealed plans to charge businesses £14 a week to have their letters delivered before 9am.
Mr Leighton said he had told them in the strongest terms to “go back to the drawing board”. He added: “Morale in our business is awful. People have to work in terrible conditions, they are not listened to, the levels of harassment, bullying, racial discrimination will be as high as any company in Britain.
