USPS Seeks More Control of Rates, Labor

The U.S. Postal Service’s transformation plan sent to Congress this month recommends turning the postal service into a commercial government operation with financial and labor flexibility more commonly found in the private sector.
This is the best way for the USPS to compete in a changing economy while maintaining universal service, postmaster general John E. Potter said in announcing the plan April 5.

Consignia to outsource buildings maintenance

Consignia is in talks to outsource maintenance of its buildings as part of its three-year plan to cut costs and return to profit, it was announced today.
The postal group said it was in talks with engineering group Balfour Beatty to conclude a partnership for its facilities management business Romec, which is responsible for day-to-day maintenance of its 3,000 buildings.
Under the deal, the pair would create a joint venture with Consignia owning a 51% share of the new business.

New law ‘will give Jersey Post unfair advantage’

JERSEY Post may have an unfair advantage over competitors under the new Postal Law, according to the Island’s competition watchdog.
In particular, says the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA), the draft law could require rival operators to subsidise Jersey Post for doorstep mail deliveries.
The preliminary draft, released for consultation by the Industries Committee some weeks ago, outlines the steps to abolish States monopoly over postal services. The changes to the structure of Jersey Post will be similar to those proposed for Jersey Telecom, with a new private limited company taking over from the States Postal Committee.

Egypt's postal authority records $10.7 billion transactions in 2001

Transactions totaling 50 billion Egyptian pounds ($10.7 billion) were carried out through Egypt’s National Postal Authority (NPA) in the year 2001, according to NPA Chairman Ahmed Al-Sowly. Of this total, seven billion EP were pension funds distributed to some three million individual accounts, reported Al-Ahram. NPA would pay out EP1.5 billion in interest this year to its 10 million savings accounts holders.
The Egyptian post provides the usual letter-post services and, in the financial field, savings and giro services and the payment of pensions. The NPA also issues vehicle licenses and insurance certificates.

Plan to re-open 300 rural post offices in Pakistan

The Pakistan Postal Services has decided to reopen 300 post offices in the rural areas to facilitate the people, it was learnt on Thursday.
Earlier, the department had closed these post offices due to various reasons and had transferred the officials posted there to other areas.
It is expected that one hundred post offices will become operational this year and the department has started postings of officials in these post offices.

Post Office closures 'Cannot be avoided'

THE Prime Minister defended sweeping changes to the Post Office network yesterday that could lead to 3,000 branch closures and thousands of staff losing their jobs.

He told the House of Commons that the Post Office network, which has more than 17,500 branches, was “not sustainable” without the changes that will be smoothed over with a Pounds 270 million government grant to refurbish branches or pay compensation where branches are closed.
