Premier: Advanced postal services to be introduced in Armenia

New advanced postal services are to be introduced in Armenia, the country’s Premier Tigran Sargsyan said at the opening of the second Armenian Technology Congress (ArmTech).

These services will be accessible in every village of the country, he said.

He pointed importance to introduction of the new services in changing public attitudes.

The program is implemented together with the private sector. It
will give an impetus to development of information technologies in
the country and will bring to an abrupt rise in number of entities
involved in IT sector, Sargsyan said.

EU tells Slovakia to keep mail service competitive

European Union antitrust regulators ordered Slovakia to reopen competition in its postal sector, ruling that recent legal changes violated EU rules on dominant market positions.

Before February, the Slovak postal system was open to competition and several private companies were active in the sector. But then the government amended the law, reserving the delivery of some mail to the incumbent postal operator.

‘The (European) Commission’s decision is directly legally binding on Slovakia, which must inform the Commission within one month of the measures undertaken to ensure that hybrid mail services remain open to competition,’ it said in a statement.

The amendment extended the monopoly of incumbent operator Slovenska Posta to the delivery of hybrid mail services, while this activity had until then been open to competition.

UPS joins EPA's Climate Leaders program

As part of its continued commitment to sustainable business practices, UPS announced its participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program.

UPS is the first shipping company to join the program.

Climate Leaders is an industry/government partnership that works with companies to develop comprehensive climate change strategies. Partner companies commit to reducing their impact on the global environment by completing a corporate-wide inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, setting aggressive reduction goals and annually reporting their progress to the EPA.

UPS has been a long-time partner of many voluntary programs sponsored by the EPA. These include a charter partner of the SmartWay Transport Partnership program in 2003, the Green Power Partnership, Waste Wise and the Energy Star program. Later this week, UPS will receive the EPA’s SmartWay Environmental Excellence Award for its leadership in conserving energy and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Parcelnet links up with Hermes

“We want to be part of the European network as part of Hermes,” Parcelnet’s Managing Director Carole Woodhead said. German-based Hermes is building up a European network with sister companies Parcelnet, Mondial Relay (France) and Porta a Porta (Italy) as well as its subsidiary in Austria.

Parcelnet is currently testing cross-border deliveries from Britain to Germany for TV shopping company QVC, Woodhead said. “More British companies are interested in Europe, and there are European customers with UK shipments,” she commented. The home delivery firm, which has so far used other European carriers for its cross-border shipments, is also in talks with France’s Mondial Relay over cooperation. “In future we want a common service offer,” she added.

Parcelnet currently handles about 110 million parcels a year, has revenues of over GBP 200 million (EUR 257 million) and “is a profitable company”, Woodhead stressed.

Royal Mail's request to waive the Redelivery local collect charge during December 2008 (UK)

Royal Mail has asked Postcomm for a temporary exemption which would waive the 50p Redelivery local collect charge during December 2008.
Postcomm published a consultation letter which seeks stakeholders’ views on Royal Mail’s request, and stakeholders are invited to respond to the letter by 7 November 2008. We expect to make a decision in early November 2008.
On 26 September 2008, Royal Mail applied for a Direction from Postcomm for exemption from the three month notification period required by Condition 7 for it to waive the 50p Redelivery Local Collect charge during December 2008. It proposed to make this change available to all recipients of items that have not been delivered on the first attempt.

Deutsche Post: New Head of Corporate Communications in March 2009

Christof Ehrhart (42), currently Head of Global Corporate Communications for the European Aeronautic Defence und Space Company (EADS), will become the Head of Corporate Communications at Deutsche Post World Net as of March 1, 2009. He thus succeeds Manfred Harnischfeger (64), who will leave the company to retire as of June 30, 2009, pursuant to contract. Harnischfeger will remain in contact with Deutsche Post World Net as a consultant.
In his new position, Ehrhart will be in charge of Group-wide internal and external communications, corporate sponsoring and worldwide brand management for Deutsche Post World Net. He will report directly to the Chairman of the Board of Management, Frank Appel.

Third-Party Logistics Providers Play Key Role in Integration, Sustainability and Security of the Supply Chain

Capgemini, Georgia Institute of Technology, Oracle and DHL release the thirteenth annual Third Party Logistics Study
The survey shows that the ‘greening’ of the supply chain will have an increasing impact on the companies.
The study is based on a survey of 1,644 logistics executives from North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America and identifies a number of key findings:
• Green supply chain initiatives are essential for future business success according to 98 pct of logistics executives, yet the majority are unwilling to invest any additional funds in the greening of the supply chain.
• The theft of material goods continues to be the top security concern. But the changing business environment means that companies must focus more attention on other causes of supply chain disruption from the theft of intellectual capital and natural disasters, to the closure of ports and product tampering.
• Underpinning sustainability and security are strong relationships across the different parties in the supply chain achieved through integrated systems and services. Through deliberate efforts to form solid relationships with logistics providers using detailed contracts and metrics, companies can achieve significant cost savings, shorter order cycles, better customer service and improved business efficiency.

CitySprint takes over PBS Deliveries

CitySprint has today (6th October 2008) acquired Birmingham based courier company PBS Deliveries for an undisclosed sum. This deal expands its unique wholly owned national network whilst further strengthening its established Midlands operations.
