More Competition in EU Postal Market

The European Parliament on Wednesday approved plans to inject more competition into the EU’s postal market. The assembly voted to accept measures agreed by EU governments last year to reduce the monopolies enjoyed by national postal services. Under the measures, from 2003 only items weighing less than 100 grams will be the exclusive domain of post offices unless a competitor charges three times the basic tariff. Current EU rules put the monopoly threshold at 350 grams.

BT Fleet Interested in Consignia Fleet Contract

Janet Entwistle, general manager of BT Fleet (the commercial vehicle division of BT Group – telecommunications), confirmed that BT Fleet has submitted a formal “indication of interest” in taking over the fleet operations of Consignia, formerly the Post Office. Like BT, Consignia is seeking outside partners for its 37,000-vehicle fleet. But Ms Entwistle said the former Post Office had provided “very little financial information” on plans for its vehicle leasing and maintenance operations.

Hyundai names FedEx exclusive carrier in U.S.

FedEx Corporation through its operating subsidiaries will be the exclusive carrier for all of Hyundai’s express document, small-package ground, and palletized express-freight shipments delivered to dealers within the United States. Hyundai will use both FedEx Express and FedEx Ground services under the new agreement.

Procedure under NAFTA lets UPS attack Canada Post in Secret

Trade ministers from the United States, Canada and Mexico last year tried to impose greater openness on a procedure under NAFTA that allows companies to sue governments for millions in monetary damages, but the effort has so far failed. As a result, United Parcel Service Inc. is now using the procedure to attack one of its major competitors, Canada Post, in relative secrecy, angering anti-NAFTA activists and the Canadian government.

US Postmaster discusses deficit

The Postal Service is facing a loss of more than $2 billion this year as mail volume lags and costs of sanitizing the mail and cleaning up contaminated offices mount.
Postmaster General John E. Potter told a House Appropriations subcommittee Wednesday that the projected deficit for this year is “somewhere above $2 billion.”
Potter said the agency is hoping the Postal Rate Commission will accelerate consideration of a rate increase so the higher prices can take effect this summer rather than in the fall as planned.
The post office is seeking a 3-cent increase in the price of sending a letter, to 37 cents.

SNP predicts disaster if Post Office is privatised

The SNP yesterday claimed Scotland’s postal service is heading for disaster if plans for privatisation go ahead.
Launching a new campaign outside Burghead post office, shadow communications minister Kenny MacAskill compared the future scenario in Scotland to the situation in Sweden, where the privatisation of its services in 1996 created a list of catastrophic problems, mainly due to burgeoning costs.
