Jersey Postal law delivers free-market message

Jersey’s mail deliveries are on the road to change from this week as the new draft Postal Services Law is published for consultation. The proposals set down by the Industries Committee seek to abolish the exclusive privilege of the States, opening up the market to competition. Power to grant licences will be given to the Island’s independent regulator, the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA).

Consignia’s interim chair-man warned yesterday that it would be “catastrophic” for the embattled re-named Post Office if its employees were to strike. “There is nobody in this organisation who really wants to strike, because everyone understands how catastrophic it would be for the company,” Allan Leighton said.

Record earnings Deutsche Post

Deutsche Post World Net, the German state-aid company, had record revenues and earnings for 2001, but warned for a more difficult 2002.
Deutsche Post group revenues totaling some 33.4 billion euro were 2.0 per cent higher than the previous year.

Earnings, the profit from operating activities (EBITA), grew 7.1 per cent to about 2.6 billion euro.

Net profit rose 4.6 per cent to around 1.6 billion for 2001. Earnings per share were 1.42 euro.

The available financial figures are still preliminary. Deutsche Post World Net will present the precise figures and further details at its financials press conference on April 8, 2002.

‘For the year 2002, we expect to continue this successful course for the group. However, it will be difficult to again surpass our operating profit,’’ said CEO Klaus Zumwinkel.

Austrian Post Office can't find its own complaints commission

Angry villagers protesting the Austrian Post Office’s closure of 600 rural branches have been told to complain to a “Control Commission” which doesn’t yet exist. The Post Office said the Commission would mediate in disputed cases. Those concerned should write to its central Vienna offices. But the villagers said on Friday there was only one problem. No-one could find the Commission – including the Post Office itself.

Nine out of ten first class letters arrive next day says Royal Mail

More than nine out of ten First Class letters are arriving the day after posting for the second three months in succession. Royal Mail is delivering a substantially better performance compared to a year ago but still has work to do in under-performing parts of the country if the year end target of 92.1% is to be met, Consignia said today. The latest quality of service report covering the final three months of 2001 showed that 90.4% of First Class letters arrived the day after posting. This was a 0.3 percentage point below the quarterly performance for July to September – but it is much better than the 87.0% result in the October to December period in 2000.

Greek Post Office fined for failing to deliver mail on time

Greece’s postal service has been fined for its failure to deliver international mail on time, a regulatory agency said Thursday. The post office was only able to deliver between 31 percent and 57.2 percent of first-class mail from five European countries within three days period, the National Committee of Telecommunications and Posts said.
