The German government yesterday reiterated that it was justified in exempting Deutsche Post, the postal group, from raising sales taxes on certain core services. Deutsche Post’s tax payments have become a major source of irritation for investors since Germany’s federal audit office in January reproached the government for granting Deutsche Post an unfair competitive advantage by exempting it from sales tax.

Business Post is in talks with potential partners to establish a high-street presence to compete with Royal Mail, and also wants to put its own collection boxes in post offices. A machine with Business Post stamps may be attached to the post box, or stamps could be bought from retailers hosting the new post boxes.
The Hungarian Post Office has been granted concession rights to carry out public procurement on the internet for 10 years. The electronic public procurement system will operate as a market place. The system was introduced to the public by Istvan Stumpf, minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Istvan Kalmar, director-general of the Hungarian Post Office.

The green light from the South African authorities will see a three or four-times weekly B747 flying between TNT’s Liege hub and Johannesburg.

TNT has been flying once or twice a week to Johannesburg on a charter basis, through Atlas Air, since October, but has applied for the aircraft to be registered in Belgium and has been training its own crew on B747s
