Post Office can cut up to £2.4bn

THE Post Office is under pressure to cut costs by up to Pounds 2.4 billion a year, it emerged yesterday. Postcomm, the regulatory body set up by the Government to regulate the postal sector, said the Post Office had scope to reduce annual expenditure by 30 per cent. Martin Stanley, the Postcomm chief executive, told MPs yesterday that Consignia, parent company of the Post Office, “does seem to have lost control of its costs”.

USPS fires at FedEx and UPS commercial market

The United States Postal Service took aim at the multi-billion corporate market dominated by FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service by introducing a new program offering discount rates for small package delivery. “Competition is good for the consumer, but is this a level playing field?” said John Flick, a spokesman for UPS, which has long complained that the Postal Service uses its domestic monopoly to subsidize its international offerings. Greg Rossiter, a spokesman for FedEx, declined to comment directly on the Postal Service move, but said customers consider not only price but quality.

DMA welcomes Postcomm proposals

The Direct Marketing Association has welcomed postal industry regulator Postcomm’s proposals to open up the market to competition. The plans, announced last month, will effectively result in Consignia losing its monopoly over the next five years.

Argentine Government Reviews Postal Rates

Argentine Cabinet Chief Jorge Capitanich said Thursday the government will begin negotiations with companies over new rates for a wide range of public services. Capitanich said in a press conference that proposals for the new rates would have to be submitted over the next 120 days.
