Further consolidation in Korean express market

Consolidation has intensified in the Korean express market with this week’s acquisition by Hanjin of rival Shinsegae, making it into the new domestic market leader ahead of Korea Express and Hyundai.

Hanjin spent 30 billion won (EUR 18.7 million) to buy Shinsegae Dream Express, part of the Shinsegae retail group, the Yonhap news agency reported. Shinsegae Dream Express made a loss of 3.3 billion won (EUR 2 million) on sales of 96.7 billion won (EUR 60 million) last year.

The acquisition would put Hanjin Express ahead of Korea Express, which ended 2007 with sales of 293 billion won (EUR 182 million), and Hyundai Express which had sales of 286 billion won (EUR 178 million). The next largest operator is CJ GLS, with revenues of 184 billion won (EUR 115 million). The four market leaders are estimated to have about 60% pct of the domestic parcel delivery market.

Earlier this year UPS bought full control of its international express joint venture with Korea Express by acquiring the latter’s 40 pct stake in the venture. UPS said the transformation of the joint venture to a wholly-owned subsidiary would allow it to grow its business in Korea and better serve its customers in a key market.

Jordan: Post offices to offer driver's licence services

Citizens will be able to obtain driver’s licences at Jordan Post Company (JPC).

JPC media consultant Zuhair Al Azzeh said they expect to finalise an agreement with the Public Security Department to implement the plan within the next two weeks.

The JPC jointly with the Civil Status and Passports Department (CSPD) and the Ministry of Public Sector Reform (MoPSR) began allowing Jordanians to renew their passports through the country’s post offices in January as part of the Kingdom’s e-government track.

Under the service, citizens can approach any of the 356 JPC branches to have their documents delivered to the local CSPD centre, processed and returned to the local post office.

Applications submitted before 10:00am are returned to the applicant the same day, while those submitted after that time will be delivered the following day, according to the scheme.

Azzeh told The Jordan Times that since its implementation, demand for the passport renewal service has increased, with thousands of citizens using the service each month.

In addition to postal and financial services, the JPC collects bills on behalf of the Jordan Telecommunications Company, the Water Authority and the Electricity Distribution Company EDCO, and also provides National Aid Fund beneficiaries around the Kingdom with their monthly allowances in line with the list provided by the welfare agency.

Post Office UK: Non-liners miss out on GBP 4.5 billion savings per year

Families with broadband can save GBP 70 per month through online access to cheaper household goods and services, according to new research from the Post Office. Those who are online paint a picture of a ‘broad-bound’ society as 96 per cent consider internet access to be a lifestyle necessity they could not live without.

Yet one third of UK households are missing out on these savings, and the wider benefits, because they are still not online. A total of almost GBP 4.5 billion of potential savings are being missed by non-web users each year, in what is a worrying effect of a deepening digital exclusion.

Broadband in the Home: An Analysis of the Financial Costs and Benefits was commissioned by Post Office Telecoms to calculate, for the first time, the financial impact of the UK’s digital divide. Fear of the initial expense of getting a PC and internet connection, or fear of online fraud, is actually deepening the digital divide amongst those who could stand to benefit most from getting online.

One year on from the launch of its broadband service, this research will inform the Post Office’s continuing work to get the digitally excluded online by improving accessibility and transparency.

FedEx Corp. reports first quarter earnings

FedEx Corp. reported earnings of USD 1.23 per diluted share for the first quarter ended August 31, compared to USD 1.58 per diluted share a year ago.
FedEx Corp. reported the following consolidated results for the first quarter:
• Revenue of USD 9.97 billion, up 8pct from USD 9.20 billion a year ago
• Operating income of USD 630 million, down 23pct from USD 814 million last year
• Operating margin of 6.3pct , down from 8.8pct the previous year
• Net income of USD 384 million, down 22pct from last year’s USD 494 million
Total combined average daily package volume in the FedEx Express and FedEx Ground segments grew 1pct year over year for the quarter. Growth in ground, FedEx SmartPost and international domestic express shipments was substantially offset by a continued decline in U.S. domestic express shipments.
Operating results declined, as strong cost management actions were more than offset by global economic weakness, higher fuel prices and the related negative effects of higher fuel surcharges. One fewer operating day at each of the transportation segments also negatively affected results. While fuel prices decreased from historic highs late in the quarter, the average price of jet fuel was up 77pct year over year.
