Romania approves DHL acquisition of Cargus

DHL’s acquisition of Romanian parcel delivery company Cargus has been formally approved by the country’s competition authorities, paving the way for DHL to become the clear leader in the fast-growing Romanian express parcels market.

DHL Romania said in a statement that the Romanian Competition Council authorised the acquisition of Cargus by Deutsche Post World Net (DPWN) on September 4, 2008. The acquisition was originally announced in April, pending approval from competition authorities. The price was not disclosed but given as EUR 50 million by Romanian newspapers.

Under the acquisition agreement, DHL Express and Cargus will remain separate companies and will maintain their present brands and service offering. Integration will focus on operational improvements, exchange of best practices and cost optimisation. However, the companies will work towards single interfaces towards customers.

DHL Global Mail expands Parcel Plus offering (U.S)

DHL Global Mail announced the expansion of its Smartmail Parcel Plus service to include packages weighing up to 10 lbs.

With this new weight limit, Parcel Plus now offers e-tailers and other high-volume mailers a more cost-effective alternative to traditional courier options for residential delivery. That means more companies can save without sacrificing speed, since Parcel Plus transit times remain highly competitive (2-5 day average for Expedited service, or 5-10 days for Budget). And Parcel Plus continues to provide the businesses demand, thanks to DHL Global Mail’s network and workshare partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, which handles final-mile delivery.

The expanded Parcel Plus service is available effective September 1, 2008.

DHL appoints Richard Owens as Senior Vice President for Global Customer Solutions Asia Pacific

DHL announced the appointment of Richard Owens as Senior Vice President for its Global Customer Solutions (GCS) organization in the Asia Pacific region. GCS is responsible for the customer relationship management of DHL’s largest customers worldwide.

Based in Singapore, Mr. Owens reports to GCS’s Chief Executive Officer, Hans Hickler.
Richard will build on business capabilities and solutions across DHL’s express, air & ocean freight, and contract logistics businesses to lead and drive the growth of DHL’s top global customers served by GCS.

Mr. Owens has devoted 25 years of his career in logistics as well as insights of the Asia Pacific logistics landscape.

Correos Spain invests EUR 15.6 million in new hardware and new centre

Correos is investing 15.6m Euros in a new data centre to house new computer equipment. The centre will form part of ongoing plans aimed at modernising its approach to handling mail.

The 15.6 million investment signals a new era for Correos which has already purchased PDAs for delivery workers and a further 2 million on RFID technology for quality control andto improve automation. IRIS-6 and SGIE, respectively manage all the processes involved in transactions at postal offices and postal centers, as well as the management and treatment of items in the 1,900 sorting offices – right up to final delivery.

Correos has chosen to sign a contract with IBM, worth 10.6 million Euro.

Royal Mail confident over deliveries despite proposed strike

Royal Mail has said it is “confident” that its letters services “will be maintained” if the Communication Workers Union (CWU) goes ahead with a proposed three-day strike beginning next Tuesday (23 September).
The strikes, which are due to begin at 6am on 23 September and finish at 6am on 26 September, cover staff employed by Romec that work in technical grades including electronic security and buildings maintenance engineers.

The engineers are threatening to strike over changes being imposed on attendance patterns.

However, a spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “Royal Mail is confident that its letters services will be maintained should any industrial action by Romec go ahead and we are working closely with Romec to ensure back-up services for the entire mail operation are maintained.”

Industrial action by Royal Mail is estimated to have cost the direct mail industry around GBP 8m in 2007.

FedEx taps Enigma for aircraft maintenance

Enigma Inc. announced that FedEx has selected the Enigma 3C(R) Platform to streamline maintenance and service operations for its entire fleet of aircraft. The Enigma solution is being deployed out of FedEx’s headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, and will serve over 7,000 internal end-users and thousands of third party maintainers worldwide.
FedEx uses the Enigma solution to increase the efficiency and consistency of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) shops and line maintenance technicians. The first phase of the project is in use, providing custom job card generation and distribution for scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. In the second phase, Enigma will help manage OEM maintenance revisions and publish service information for the entire FedEx fleet. With Enigma’s services oriented architecture (SOA), FedEx can integrate maintenance information with other systems such as inventory, scheduling, configuration management, onboard diagnostics and editing systems. FedEx also plans to use Enigma technology in various other applications.

Post Office may go into mobiles after success of broadband (UK)

The Post Office is considering launching a mobile phone service after the success of its move into the residential broadband market, which has given the company more than 500,000 customers only a year after the launch.
Having just reduced its broadband prices, the Post Office also reckons that it is benefiting from the credit crunch as cash-strapped homeowners look for the best deals in the market.
Telecoms is a crucial area for the Post Office as it looks to increase revenues, and it is roughly on track to hit its target of a million broadband users by 2011, according to Martin Moran, head of telecommunications at the Post Office.
The Post Office’s broadband and home phone service has been particularly popular among lower income households, as it allows consumers to pay cash at their local branch rather than signing a direct debit. But the worsening economic climate has attracted consumers from higher socio-economic groups.
It is also very interested in offering a mobile phone service, using the infrastructure of one of the five existing mobile phone networks. Moran said a mobile phone service was still “in the planning” stage but something could also be rolled out next year.
