Hand Held Products announces $9 million local expansion

SKANEATELES FALLS, N.Y., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ — Hand Held Products, Inc. (HHP), a Welch Allyn affiliate and leading provider of image-based automatic identification data collection barcode scanners, POS automation and mobile/wireless solutions, broke ground today on a $9 million construction project for its world headquarters in Skaneateles Falls, N.Y. The new 111,000-square-foot facility will be completed by spring 2002. The state-of-the-art facility, with more than double the square footage of the existing building, will be located just blocks from the current site.

Consignia aims to improve e-commerce delivery

Delivery has been a problem for e-commerce in the past, but Consignia’s new services aim to improve the experience for buyers and sellers

Gift and grocery delivery may be easier this Christmas, thanks to expanding schemes from Consignia, the new brand name for the Post Office. Non-delivery and late arrival of goods ordered online has been a major problem in the past two years, but services from Consignia could improve matters for some buyers and sellers.

Local collection services, which started in five areas three months ago, are now available across the whole of the country. Local collection allows items to be picked up from the recipient’s nearest post office. About 2,000 items a day are now collected locally and over 110 sites offer the service free, Consignia said.

FedEx Ground volume takes off: Freight mitigates air losses

“We believe that FedEx Ground package volume will grow approximately 9% and that yields will increase about 6%, similar to first-quarter growth rates,” FedEx chief financial officer Alan Graf said.

But in its first detailed disclosure of how the attacks have affected its business, FedEx said it expects second-quarter U.S. air express shipments to be down 11% from a year earlier, and international express to fall 5%.

Until now, FedEx had said it was unable to quantify the attacks’ effects. Most of its rivals, including top package deliverer United Parcel Service Inc., have warned of lower package volume, higher costs and weaker profits.
