CWU attacks licence for privateer. Regulator encourages destruction of universal mail service

POSTAL workers’ union CWU condemned industry regulator PostComm’s decision
yesterday to license privateer Hays to deliver business mail. CWU national officer Pat O’Hara warned: “They are not just allowing but
encouraging a commercial firm to cream off the profitable business.” Hays was given a year-long licence to deliver business documents before 8am in
parts of London, Edinburgh and Manchester.

Swiss national council refuses to hinder post office closures

The Swiss national council has refused to deal immediately with a motion proposed on Monday requesting a moratorium on the restructuring of the post office until a new mandate for services is accepted by parliament. The proposal would have had a good chance of success if it had been dealt with on the first day of the parliamentary session. Tabled in June, it was approved by 93 national councillors.

Deya set to offer rapid response deliveries

AT FIRST sight, Deya, a small private distribution company from Wokingham, seems an unlikely candidate to launch one of the most controversial services seen in the postal network.

Deya wants to go where the might of Royal Mail has often feared to tread and offer a mail delivery service for areas hit by industrial action. It aims to offer service for council tax bills, housing benefit payments and gas, water and electricity bills. The scheme is a big jump from its other work – delivering telephone directories, Ikea catalogues and romantic novels for Mills & Boon.

Post Office Unlikely to Accept Help

Africa News has reported that “a host of foreign postal administrations, including those in France, Canada and the Netherlands, have come forward to offer their expertise and other assistance to the SA Post Office. This comes in the wake of the termination of the management contract forged in 1999 between New Zealand’s Transend Worldwide and the SA Post Office. The contract was cancelled earlier this year after the Post Office failed to break even this year, as guaranteed by the New Zealanders. A SA Post Office spokesman said the Post was unlikely to forge another full management contract with a foreign postal organisation.”

Deutsche Post plans internet postage service in Germany

Deutsche Post plans to launch its Internet postage service throughout Germany on September 17.

The system, which recently completed a successful three-month-long pilot, requires a Pentium PC with ink jet or laser printer and Internet access.

In order to print postage on a home PC or in the office, customers will have to purchase the post’s new Stampit software. The package costs $75 with an additional $7.25 for the printed user manual. After the first six months, a $2 monthly service fee is added.
