Japan's postal Titanic

In his
swearing-in speech as postal minister in 1997, Junichiro Koizumi shocked the
assembled top bureaucrats of the ministry he was about to lead. “The three key postal services must be privatized,” Koizumi declared. “We
cannot be ruled by inefficiencies.” It was effectively a declaration of war
from within, for privatization would mean that the bulk of those he was
addressing would be made redundant, and one of Japan’s oldest ministries would
be crushed.

The Ministry of Communication is planning to renovate the russian mail service

ST.PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, SEP 16, 2001 (A&G News via COMTEX) — By 2005 it is
planned to unite the state mail operators. The main idea is to create a
national mail operator in the form of a state unitary enterprise (SUE). The
changes will also include centralized management, as well as modern financial
and accounting systems. Later on the company is likely to be privatized.

Postal Authority unveils new identity, vision

The General Postal Authority (GPA) announced today a new identity,
vision and renewed commitment to serve. The GPA’s new identity begins with a new name – Emirates Post –
which officials say will be accompanied by a series of other changes
and a host of new services, technologies and systems. The service also has a new corporate logo which features a flying
falcon – a symbol of the tradition and heritage of the UAE.

USPS to reclassify mail

IF MAILERS THOUGHT they had the ins and outs of postal rate categories and preparation nailed down, they may need to think again. The U.S. Postal Service plans to implement a reclassification by the summer 2004.

Postal officials say the reclassification–which they’re calling a product redesign–will lead to increased volumes and revenue as the service faces back-to-back deficits of between $1 billion and $3 billion over the next two years.
